What do you do with the hogs you shoot?

I know the obvious is to butcher and eat them.

I like to shoot any hogs on spot to help eradicate them from my area. But some of the old hogs don't taste very good or if its the day I'm getting ready to go back home then I just don't feel like messing with cutting up a hog.


What does everyone do with their hogs. can you dump them someplace?

I ran into a group called " hogs for a cause", if you shoot one and don't want it they take it and process it to give to the needy. Look them up, I think they might come pick it up and everything, don't really remember though.

I like shooting hogs for the hunting opportunity and the meat. The landowner where I usually hunt just wants them all gone, she doesn't care what we do with them. Since she lets me hunt her place, her wishes take priority. I'll take some to butcher for myself and any friends/family that might want some, and the rest get tossed in the brush for the yotes and buzzards.

Leave them where they die.

I'll shoot them for someone if they want to come and get them to gut and process on their own. I will not do it for them. If no one wants them then I haul them to one spot so other critters can use them.

I'm guessing that dumping them on the side of the road (state hwy) for the yotes and other critters is illegal?
Down in south Texas I use to see tons of hogs dumped on the side of the road.

same method as with old deer, if backstraps little tough, tenderize, ground inta ghamberger, it is pork, an the ol wrap in bacon. not sure what laws are for donating wild game to charity, as far as eradicating, wounded warrior program, take a youth hunt, newbie hunt, volenter for that, always willing ta learn. just ta name a few ideas, thought I was only one that doesnt have any friends ta hog hunt with. used ta doing a solo. gotta be me, no one else wants the job. keep your head held high & your powder dry or use em for yote bait

See lots of them with backstraps and hams pulled out and then dumped. Many are just dumped on the side of the road in the ditch. Some are hit by vehicles that are dead also. I have one location on my place to dump dead animals so I know what the buzzards are circling over at that spot for.

I'll backstrap them and pull hams on larger pigs. BBQ pit sized ones I'm skin whole. But sometimes there isn't room in the freezer or time to butcher them all. Regardless, we have a shoot on site rule, and they all get added to the bone pile at the bottom of a Canyon to use at coyote bait.

I catapult them through my neighbor's house in Houston.

I drag em all off into the brush.

Coyotes need some fine dining as their last supper.

not make light of the subject but every coyote I can fill up with gut piles and hog carcasses is one that is less tempted to grab a fawn

I hang them up from a tree like they are standing then use them as target practice....

I grind them all into sausage unless they are pit sized.

Tried that but that stuff is hard to rip out on a hog. I do pet the skulls though....

Us east Texans can't afford turquoise and elk ivories for jewelry. So we use hog tushes and coon peckers.

i won't even shoot one unless i'm going to skin, quarter and pack it in ice for someone to eat.

if i leave any orphans, i try to gather them up and find a new home for them.

i also offer counseling services for survivors that have been traumatized.

i hear some folks just peel out on their heads tho...

I keep the small hogs to process....the big stinky ones I'll give to a friend who seems to know how to process them. He's a hillbilly from Kentucky. Last big boar I shot many years ago was so funky the dog wouldn't even eat it.

Keep the ones under 100 pounds and give the others to the Chupas.

I used to feel bad. not anymore.

you can only eat so many pigs and not everyone wants one. and if they do they want it quartered on ice and they want to keep your ice chest.


I shot two year 3 years ago and cleaned them. bigger sows. year before last I shot a 100 lb boar and took his backstraps. those things stunk. I've killed a couple or three this year and tried to give them away. no takers.

If it is nice and cold out and it is a smaller one then I save it and clean it. If it is hot out I let them lay. Last one I killed by the time I got out of the stand it was already covered up in flies and nasty.

Usually we eat them or grind them with deer meat for sausage. One time nobody wanted any so we chunked a couple off of the drop off into a deep granite quarry. I kind of wished someone had been below filming them coming down so we could prove that pigs really do fly.

We keep every one of them and fill up as many freezers as we can. We also do BBQs for Wounded Warriors, churches, feed disaster relief victims, and workers.

We have more places that can use them than we have hogs to give away.

I give mine to Allsups so they can keep making the Burritos

And I shoot every one of them that I can and leave them right there. I have taken exactly 3 to a processor out of the countless bastages I have killed. I hate the things more than I hate coons. They have torn up every acre on our ranch and I hope they all contract swine flu and die.

I shoot all that I see and eat all of them. Luckily my wife, father in law, and mother in law actually help me process them. They are way easier to process than a deer, only because you can leave all of the fat and their isn't any silver skin. I can gut and quarter a hog in about 1/2 an hour. and process him and vacuum pack him in a couple of evenings after work. If you know what you are doing they taste great.

After what txkiller told me he found on the hogs he killed this weekend, I am thinking to never eat wild pig again

Leave em where they lay unless it wieghs about 100 lbs then I might try to make sausage out of it.

I've got a 3 ft. rope with loops on the ends that stays in the back of the truck just for dragging hogs away from my deer hunting areas. One loop goes around the hind leg and the other goes around the trailer hitch. I'll drive a quarter mile down the pasture road and drop them off in an open area so that I can pop a yote or two if I'm lucky.
Sure, I eat hog meat all the time and love it; I just shoot far more than I can ever eat. I have yet to make a dent in the population, however, I have put a big dent in my supply of arrows and .300 rounds.

Sow's are processed, boars over 200 is South Tx field dressed
anything trapped is sold, piglets are fed out for 6 months then sold if freezer is full

If she ain't too bad lookin', take her to bed. Otherwise I give them my friends.

Took a larger sow on the LBJ Grasslands Monday morning. All 4 quarters, backstraps and ribs are in the freezer. Can't wait to cook the ribs!

I have a 30 gallon water tank and a 12v water pump/hose installed on my Gator. Got a game hoist, gambrel, & scrub brush. I'll hoist them and scrub the stink off follow up with rinse down and you gotta clean squealer hanging. Gut him and drop the guts where he dropped. Turn the hanger and drop the pig in the bed and head to camp. Get the meat in brine and repeat.

Out of the 100 or so I kill/year, I eat a couple smaller ones. The rest go to the gut dump or get left right where they are.

I eat some. Give the rest away when possible. Some get left for buzzards and yotes.

I eat/freeze all of em I can and donate some to families around me. The rest are yote bait, they gotta eat too.

I eat them because that's the only morally and ethically thing to do after hunting them. Anything else would be egregious.

from what ive learned, it depends on how the individual sees the hog.

Due to temps before this weekend and getting overrun this year, we drag em off to side hunting area or leave em be. Just learned that you should cut em open before leaving because it helps the critters take care of them faster. Shot my second hog last saturday evening weekend - sweating all day. even if I would have had time it was too dang hot to mess with it. Big sow that probably would have went over 150. if temps are right i will cut out straps and possibly consider back hams but straps for sure.

Buzzards gotta eat.. same as worms...

Eat them , the wife and girls love em on the pit
