Need some help with a Fair Price

Need some help with a Fair Price - 12/24/12 03:16 AM

Grandpa is done hunting after this year. I am going to buy his feeders and blinds from him and need some help with what will be fair price. He tried to give them to me, but this year has been really rough on him several thousand dollars worth of surgeries and home repairs.. Just looking for around about price i was thinking around $2,000 for everything, but not sure if that's fair or not..

1. 14ft Tripod Winch Feeder purchased 3 years ago for $500.00 has a timer on it unsure of the brand of feeder or timer.

2. 55 gal normal feeder about 10 years old with newer timer

3. Fiberglass Box blind 4x6 on 10 ft tower. Purchased about 4 or 5 years ago for $2,000.00

4. 4x4 wood box blind on 4 ft tower. About 3 years old

5. Homemade Protein Feeder ( converted an old corn feeder )

6. 16 ft ladder stand ( 2 man unsure of brand ) about 5 years old.

.50 on the dollar is always a starting point if they are in good shape and you are wanting to move them fast. More if they are in great shape and you have moved them to a central location.

I should have mentioned that the good thing is i do not have to move anything i am just going to leave them where they are and use that spot along with my normal hunting area.. The ladder stand and one of the feeders are set up along the river and everyone uses them.. As far as the blinds are concerned they are in great shape, love the fiberglass one never hunted in one until he got this one.. Alot better than all of my wood blinds that make more noises than my kids do.. lol

I think $2000 sounds about right.

Not have to move them and re-set them up makes them worth more to me.

JMO....

Sit down with him and talk it over. If he insists giving them to you, then oblige and take it to heart that he WANTS you to have his stuff. Invite him out next year to shoot the biggest buck on the place and make memories man.

Just my honest opinion....but if you need to buy them (to make yourself feel like you did the right thing) I understand that as well.

Just do what you feel is right and you will be happy you made the right decision.

That's a pretty good idea.. I already told him anytime he wanted to go hunting in the future let me know and i would take him.. But i still feel I should pay something. For Christmas he gave me a very special rifle. My grandmother who died when I was 12 purchased this rifle. Its a Rem 700 BDL 30-06. She bought it for him in 1971. He owns many rifles but this is the only one he has hunted with since 1993 when she passed away. I know he would prefer to just give me the rest of his stuff, but this year has been extremely hard on him.. At last count he spent around $15k in home repairs and 22 k on surgery.. Just for reference he is 74 and still works everyday to make ends meat.

If he's old enough for Medicare the medical bills shouldn't be too bad. If he isn't, I'd try to give him as much as I could for the stuff.

I would pay for things that he needs. I do this for my Aunts that are on fixed incomes. If they need something I go ahead and either get it or arrange for the work to be done. I have been doing that since my Dad passed in 05. My aunts are in their 90's. I'm sure your grandad would appreciate the help. texas

If he wants you to have it take it. I won't take money from family and friends. Then get you hands on his old light bill and set up auto pay to send the light company some bucks every payday. Maybe the water bill too. I've been doing this for mom and dad for decades. They're fine with this. And don't let him stop hunting it will keep him moving.

$2000 sounds like a fear price to me. And I would do the same thing you are doing.

Pay as much as you can. He may need a little extra money. If your grandpa was like mine, you owe him more than what a little hunting equipment is worth.

Pay what you can. My grandpa left me all his guns right before he passed away. When he called for me to come get them , I brought cash ( what I could) at first he would not except but after we sat and visited for awile and I told him how much I loved him and what he meant to me, and how thankful I was for all the things he taught me and did for me , I handed it to him. He hugged me and thanked me, said I'm proud of you boy!!! It will definatley mean something to him wether he excepts it or not!!!

The family and emotional business aside. $2000 is more than fair and almost generous. Its good that you are doing what is over and above right here when he offered just to give it to you.

Just my experience from owning a business and land with family. Get a bill of sale with pictures of all the equipment and break down what you paid. I realize the problem will never be with you and your grandpa but when he is gone thats when the documentation will come in handy with the rest of the family. You may think that nobody else is involved in this but that can change quickly once he is gone.

The claws often come out from whom you lest expect it. Many families don't have issues until estates are divided. I work for a public accounting firm and see this often. It would blow your mind. Get it in writing, however you decide to proceed. up

CHRIS… I think $2000 is a fair price. If I was you I would insist that my grandfather to take the money. In the long run you’re both going to fill better about this situation. I would let him know by doing this; at some point it should help to keep the peace between family members. Also ask him to give you a bill of sale.
