what do you plan to kill this upcoming season - 06/21/08 09:13 PM

lets get the talk back to hunting.

what are your goals animals wise this upcomming year?

its my turn for a trophy whitetail, i hope to take one over 150 this december, although with the lack of rain it dosen't look good. i saw one last year that will push 160 if he did't succumb after the the rut. there is also another slick eight tht will be in the high 140's, low 150's that i would cap in a heartbeat.

if i don't get a whitetail, i'm going to try for another axis, one that would beat my 29' that i have already.

that and a butt-load of doves

Nothing less than a 9 point, and some hogs. I will let my kids and wife kill any deer that need taken out. If they get a shot at a nice one great.

Oh, and nothing younger than 3.5, hopefully 4.5. Just don't know if I can hold out.

Well, I just got back from a spring grizzly hunt on Alaska's Seward Peninsula. Got a nice bear: 8'10" and 25 5/8" green-scored. In Sept, it's Wyoming for bighorn sheep in Unit 5. Then in Oct, blacktail deer in Humbolt Co, California. November, I'll be chasing Texas whitetails. In December, it'll be pheasant in Kansas, and still, Texas whitetails (perhaps). All in all, a full year.....

I am hoping to get my first White Tail Buck this year. Also, a few hogs and either a Axis or Black Buck would be cool!

The big one I saw last year but couldn't get a shot. I hope he's still around!

And a decent boar. I'm yet to get one with nice cutters for a Euro Mount.

Do you prefer hiding in the crepe myrtles or the kids corral during your stock? White or wheat bread?

I shoot at them with tracers

Re: what do you plan to kill this upcoming season - 06/22/08 02:41 PM

Every time I go out for white tail, I manage to end up somewhere with a bag limit of 1. I want to get more than one, if I can even get out this year.

And some hogs.

And at least one predator.

TBH, my goal is just to get out. Shooting anything will be a bonus.

I like the istaca brand tracers, they are pretty rad

Well I'm a "meat hunter", I don't eat the horns and seeing me deep freeze went out two nights ago! I lost everything!

So I will be going to South Dakota to hunt pheasants for a week at my brothers place in late October. A week after that hunt I will be in northern Minnesota to hunt deer with my father on our property.

Then to return to Texas a week before Thanksgiving to treat my father to a hunt in west Texas. At 54 he can't wait and brings it up everytime we talk.

After deer season I will be still trying to stick a pig out on lake lavon. Pigs are still 15 chevk4 0.

Needless to say it is going to be a busy fall but well worth it and fun.

God bless our troops

Re: what do you plan to kill this upcoming season - 06/23/08 10:54 AM

I think I have the best chance this year to take my biggest trophy buck ever. Which is not much compared to some being that I haven't even killed a buck over 110 before. This year I will hopefully let the arrow fly on a 140 or better. This past season was very successful for me and I was able to get quite a few does taken for the freezer. Next season brings forward a new ranch and a bunch of wonderfull oppotunities.

I would love to get one of the two double drop tined bucks seen around our west TX lease as season ended this past year. We may not be able to keep this lease after this upcoming season, due to all the costs, so maybe a nice muley too.

Re: what do you plan to kill this upcoming season - 06/23/08 04:46 PM

I will have the best chance at some hogs and some yotes. And with some good deer added in there. I have to take care of some of the hogs on our place, its getting out of control.

Whitetail buck 4 1/2+ years of age. Several does, a hog or two, another turkey, and maybe an exotic if the right one walks by.

Personally I am looking forward to dove season. Youth season, I hope my youngest can get some camp meat and if he sees big boy, well i can't tell him no. I figure my boys will do most of the shootin. I would like to get some good video during the rut. Thinking it might be a good idea to whittle down the varmit population. I would really like a fat bobcat mount for the lodge. Now that I am hooked on calling turkeys a nice fan mount for the wall.

I am looking to find a whitetail that will break me into the 170's class. I have some that got close, but now I am holding out. I havent killed a buck in 2 years. The one I am looking for is 5.5 years plus and HEAVY.

Re: what do you plan to kill this upcoming season - 06/25/08 04:49 PM

Whatever I can get a bead on (legally of course).
I'm serious.

If it has nutritional value, I'll hunt it, kill it
and feed it to my family.

Time, access and opportunity limits being what they
are I will be VERY happy to get a few good dove hunts,
a doe (the more the merrier) and possibly a duck hunt
or two. I've been blessed the past few years so whatever
meat I can put on the table and in the freezer is just
a huge BONUS.

Well, this year, I am going to kill whatever is legal with my bow. I have never killed a deer with bow, only hogs. I will have at least 2 deer in the freezer prior to regular season opens.....hopefully.
When rifle season opens, I will be waiting on the big one.

That would probably look similar to this. I have always wanted a porcupine to mount and when this monster (this thing must have weighed 15lbs) came walking out in front of me I thought I had hit the jackpot. I had my 22-250 shooting 55g Trophy Bond Bear Claw bullets. I thought that with the soft tissue of the porcupine the Trophy Bond (they are supposed to be tough) would Zip right through with out expanding much and ruining the mount. Obviously I was wrong.... at 40yards if you shoot a porcupine with a 22-250 and a Trophy Bond it appears as though you carry a rocket propelled grenade launcher into the woods to shoot small spiny creatures therein making them explode.

Re: what do you plan to kill this upcoming season - 06/27/08 02:45 AM

NO NO NO the way you capture a porcupine is.....

and SOMEWHERE there is video but I don't know where.

You get a sligtly inebriated fat guy with a beard, wearing a kilt and top hat, armed with a grain scoop/snow shovel and a large galvanized trash can.

Take said equipment onto a large alfalfa field just east of Ft Stockton.

When you come up onto a porkie, you scoop him/her into the trash can.

When the porkupine is so large as to be able to stand up in the can, and touch the fat man's hand, then said fat man says (explitave deleted) and drops the can, thus releasing the porkupine.

The others he captured that trip are currently residing at the Ft Worth Zoo...
