What Feed Mix works best for you?

What Feed Mix works best for you? - 03/08/12 10:18 PM

I am headed to the lease in a couple of weeks to fill up my feeders. I was curious what mix works best for you. Corn only, Corn-Protein, Corn-Protein-Peas. Just looking for ideas if I should stick with the Corn-Protein mix I used last year or try something different. Note: This will be put into a spincast feeder.

Thanks...

corn only. I have used the golden nuggets before and they work out of a spin cast feeder good too

We do half corn half beans.

With that larger new spin feeder I would shy away from protein in it and go straight corn. If it stays wet this spring you will have trouble with the spinner and the protein mix. I would go straight protein in the Lamco.

We use corn or corn-soybean mix but we have bad experiences with trying to use protein out of a spin feeder. It gets wet, swells up and plugs the spinner mechinism.
If you want to use protein go to a gravity feeder

Stampede mix (Corn and soy beans) Deer love the soy beans once that start on them.

The only thing that I have ever tried was protein and corn, that combination just gummed everything up.

I like using a little acorn rage which is a very fine powder so doesnt clog that much.. usually mix in Sept right before deer season. puts out a nice cloud of acorn dust.

Thanks for the replies. Next question :-). Anyone know where I can pickup roasted soy beans in Junction Texas? Either just the soybean's or the corn/roasted soybean mix.

I pretty sure that Mummes in Hondo and the northside of San Antonio on Mwy 281 north has them and the corn mix just have to check on them. I know that Leopold in Nada has them closer to Houston. Might also check at Bode Feeds in Harper.

I would stick to using straight corn...west Texas has been wet and the deer are not hitting our free choice feeders due to vegetation in the area.

I have a few corn feeders and cameras out testing areas for activity before locating new feeding stations. Deer hit them at first, now nothing. They are enjoying the spring green-up so much, that they are passing on the corn. Not wasting the corn though, I am going to have some nice, fat hogs.

I'll have beans and peas growing if the rain doesn't wash them out. Thank you Lord for the rain!

Give West Bear Creek a call.

I'm using about 1 - 2.5 SPLIT black eye peas to corn and the deer & turkey keep it pretty well cleaned up. Took the deer a while to figure out the peas but once they started eating 'em they kept it up! The splits seem to not be as hard as whole peas.

I saw some sheds this past week from some bucks on Rack Plus. Sick looking main beams like something out or Illinois or Kansas.

That is what I am going to feed

I use only corn out of the spincast feeders and only protein out of a free choice feeder. At this time of year I turn down the timer to 3 seconds 2 times a day and the protein feeder is filled to the max. I want the deer to eat the protein over the corn right now.

Have tried mixing corn in the free choice w/ protein. Didn't work too well. Deer only wanted the corn.

Have tried roasted soybeans mixed w/ protein. Didn't work. Deer only ate the protein and left the soybeans on the ground.

Have tried whole grain oats w/ the protein and it didn't work at all. Deer kept pushing the protein and oats out on the ground till the protein only was in the tube.

I found I wasted a lot of time trying different mixes and found just Antler Max or Purina 20 worked the best out of the free choice feeders.

I don't understand the spinning of protein. IMO, it needs to be there for when they want it. Not when weather permits!

It's not cheap to protein feed...if you do it right! I spent more on protein than what my lease total per gun was, but it was all ate and harvested a good buck!

I use Protein blocks from Angelo Pellets, apple mineral blocks and alfalfa hay. dwalls alfalfa will probably work best in your area and call in exotics. Rafter feed in Sonora has the best hay around.

Mummes apple corn is the best bait I have found. I have nothing but blocks out now due to all the browse that has came up. Yall had some good rains with more coming. you could save up and put out mass quantities when it starts browning up.

The only reason we really spin protein on our lease is to attract exotics (axis & sika). I am not sure about trying to go the roasted soy bean/corn mix route. Too many mixed reviews on here. I will most likely just run straight corn (apple scented) through my spin feeder and run a protein/corn mix through my lamco.....

50% corn 25% milo 25% peas. Feeds your deer, quail, turkey, and dove.

i am running corn/protein 60/40 right now, about to add some split black eye peas to it, probly end up with a bit more corn and equal protein and peas. i am on a very small piece of land so trying to keep the corn as an attractant too.

Out of a spin feeder I would only use corn. For your protein, invest in a free choice feed tube. I saw that Acaemy is now selling free choice feed tubes for about $25 that you then attach to a 55 gallon drum.
