Crock pots and deer camp

Crock pots and deer camp - 10/11/11 01:38 AM

I don't want to run my generator ALL day just to run a crock pot. Anybody have any ideas for crockpot cooking with sporadic electricity in the trailer?

Thanks.

How about a Dutch oven? ,a Dutch oven does amazing good cooking. You could just put it in a small hot coal pit and cover it to lesson the danger of fire. Have done cobbler, bread, stew like this in the Rockies.

Fire ban and high winds make this an option only in perfect situations.

Batteries and an ac/dc inverter would be my last thought. Don't know what the amp draw would be on the low setting, but may be a possible solution and recharge the batteries when you get back in camp to run the gen.

I thought I have seen propane crockpots. May be worth investigating if the Dutch Oven is not an option.

coleman makes a propane one.

If you search around I'm sure you could find it cheaper.

I'm in the same boat as you. Camp runs on diesel gen as needed, and running it for a slow cooker makes no sense.
I have one like listed above that runs on the littel green bottles, and used it last year. Worked great on a big fallow roast, and other stuff. I throw all the veggies and meat and seasonings in before getting ready for the evening hunt. Top it off with broth/water, fire it up and put it in the big metal grill outside, so I don't have to worry about the cabin. Come back from the hunt and its ready to eat... I'd recommend it.

I would also X2 the Dutch oven. Some of the best meals I've had have come out of a Dutch oven. No, I didn't do the cooking..

Make the meals in a crock pot at home, then reheat at the lease.
