Don't quote me but I think there is a way to get a permit to remove some legally. Would have to jump thru hoops to get one I am sure. But otherwise no you can't. I would let them clean up the mess.

crazy as it sounds, they are protected like hawks, Eagles, etc.

by the way, NOTHING will eat a dead buzzard.

Re: Is it legal to kill vultures/buzzards? - 08/23/11 09:24 PM

We had the permits at one time, a long, long time ago. They can be hard to get. At that time it was nothing to see 300 or so in large swarms in our area. It would look like a large migration or something going on. We had to have a biologist come out a few times and observe it and then about 4 months later we got permits for 8.

For your problem, it's not worth the trouble of messing with.

The black headed vultures hang out in groups and are nuisances for sheep, goat, and cattle ranchers. They are very aggressive and causing ranchers to look for ways to control them. Here is the US Fish & Wildlife Service form to fill out for anyone interested in doing it the legal way. http://www.fws.gov/forms/3-200-13.pdf

Re: Is it legal to kill vultures/buzzards? - 08/23/11 11:29 PM

I had a flock of those black head vultures kill a newborn calf a couple years ago. They are more aggressive than the "buzzards". I go t me a donkey and put with the cows. There is not a vulture or a coyote that doesn't get chased off now. Darndest thing, that donkey is territorial...Maybe that's why my neighbors have feral hogs and I never see any. Never thought about that.

You can kill them but it has to be with the front end of your truck.

They also make a nice thump when they hit a Lexus at 80 mph.

To the best of my knowledge they are classifed as a "bird of prey". That is why they are protected likes hawks, etc.

Licenses can be obtained, but tough to get.

Plus 100 on the blackheaded ones being aggressive. Have seen them start on downer sheep before it's dead and have seen them kill newborn lambs.

Might not be able to kill them, but nothing says ya can't put a round right next to them though.

I'm not a hunter.. I don't like killing things that I don't need to....I don't need to eat deer or wild hog.....

I asked the question because there were so many buzzards around that I wanted to make sure they didn't mess with my dogs....

So I don't care if you hunt or kill whatever you want, but I really don't have any desire to hunt..

Seventies I was big into tournament fishing. Eighties was both tournament fishing and fishing with my three kids. Nineties my wife and I enjoyed the couples tournaments. Don't get more fun than competition fishing even when the stakes or not huge. Now I've found something I enjoy at least as much if not more. Taking the grandkids fishing and hunting. Just watching and helping them enjoy the outdoors is a high folks have to experience to understand. Grandkids think granddads no everything and who am I to bust their balloon. cheers

Know a guy that hit one with his windshield in a little car several years ago. The windshield caved and the bird ended up in the passenger floorboard. It gets better! Before he could get stopped the vulture was trying to move/fly/get out of there. One of their defense mechanisms is to vomit the nasty crap they eat when frightened or threatened. Dang thing puked the foulest rankest smelling stuff you could imagine in that car. The smell was there for good after that!
