If you only had one gun

If you only had one gun - 03/04/11 01:15 PM
I know most of you like to hunt different types of animals, in different conditions, and different terrains, all things considered, now group them all into one. If you could only have one, what would you say is the one gun/caliber that would fit your pleasures

If we are talking just one hunting rifle, I'd keep my 270. If you mean just one gun period, it would be a shotgun.

Re: If you only had one gun - 03/04/11 02:42 PM
Right on with the shotgun. You can still use it to shoot a deer.

Re: If you only had one gun - 03/04/11 07:38 PM
If I was down to one long arm, it would likely be a shotgun.
If I was down to one hunting rifle it would be my Rem 700 in .30-06.
Not part of the original question, but I'll throw this out anyway: If I was down to one handgun, it would be a .22 revolver.

Lots to be said for the 12g argument and very little to say against it. Excluding a shotgun?........ .30-06 would be my choice for when the zombies come.....and they are coming

Re: If you only had one gun - 03/04/11 10:02 PM
If I could only own one gun it would be something that is popular in some european countries where you can only own one. A DRILLING, 3 guns in one.
If talking about centerfire rifles for big game, Probally the 6.5-384 I have on order.
If talking about survival situation Giove me a 22LR, can carry plenty of ammo, small game is easier to find and if callupon a 22 will kill larger game with a well placed shot

I know yall may not agree with me, but I have been shooting a 22LR since I was 5. I have killed many, many things with it over the years. I think many guys now days lost what I think hunting is about. Being able to stalk up on your prey unknowning to them and take a well placed shot to drop them in their tracks. If you are in a situation of only having one gun, that would be a no brainer.

Re: If you only had one gun - 03/05/11 06:30 AM
If I could have only one gun, it would be:
Remington 870 Express Super Magnum 12 Ga. 3.5 in. with interchangeable choke tubes and an additional catilevered rifled slug barrel with scope. Additional accessories would be a a easily removeable saddle scope mount with either a red dot scope or holographic sight when using the regular smoothbore barrel.
This one gun with accessories and the wide variety of shells it can handle - every shot size from 2.75 in. # 7.5 shot to 3.5 in. BB or so to 3 in. slugs, can be used for defense, squirrel and rabbit hunting, varmit hunting, deer, hog, and bear hunting, large game hunting (including elk & moose), waterfowl hunting, turkey hunting, dove, quail, & pheasant hunting. With the rifled and scoped barrel, it can easily take down a deer, or elk at 150 yards - some will say more. For a one gun to do it all, this is the best fit for me. Not that I would want just one gun, mind you. This gun is not only versatile, but simple to operate and maintain and is tough and reliable.

Re: If you only had one gun - 03/05/11 02:06 PM
Very Interesting guys, Thank you. Although only one gun was asked for, several were stated, so I went and counted everything anyway The unofficial results if you want to know are:
12ga - 21
270 12
22 5
308 4
300 Mag 4 includes wsm
30-06 3
223 3
243 2
22-250 2
257 WBY 1
6.5-284 1
20ga 1
I would have thought that the 30 cal rifles would have placed higher, but thats just me
As for my votes, I would have to say 12ga, reason being it works for Home Protection to putting meat on the table.

I have a Baikal over under combo gun in 6.5x55 over 12 GA and I am set up for reloading both. I also have an insert barrel in 20 GA that fits it. If something happened to cause me to own only one gun, I could do anything I needed with that one.

Hard not to take the Sig, or the M4, or the shotgun.... but one gun, got to be a 22LR

I'll take my mossy 835 with the additional cantilever rifled barrel. Although I'm not too fond of the gun, she's definitely a work-horse and never fails (still need to get the caked-on mud off of her from duck season tho).

Re: If you only had one gun - 03/09/11 01:10 AM
If the purpose is self defense, like in an end of the world situation with death/destruction/that whole bit I would want something with common ammo that could take down people at range; like an M4 223. If its just one gun for hunting, then a 12ga shotgun, without question.

Re: If you only had one gun - 03/17/11 12:15 AM
id go with a bolt action 22lr for a long term survival situation. Ammo is super cheap. You can cary alot, hunt just about any game around here with it in an emergency, and there are minimal moving parts to wear out and break, and they are easy to maintain. Oh, and they are extremely accurate. Using a bolt action forces you to conserve ammo and make sure of your shot before you take it.
shotgun would be a good choice too if you were relatively stationary. In a survival situation where your on foot constantly moving...no way i could cary enough ammo to survive off of for long term.
