what calliber and why? - 11/02/10 08:43 PM

what do you shoot and what is your reason you chose that round above all others?

Posted By: redchevy

Re: what calliber and why? - 11/02/10 08:48 PM

My first was a 270 win, reason-thats all dad would let me buy, i was 10.

Since then I have a 223 rem because it is cheap to shoot and relatively quiet, also something easier for sis inlaw and my girlfriend to shoot. Last is 300 wby, because I wanted a bigger gun, loads of fun to shoot, and I no longer need to buy any more guns, I have the bases covered.

.270 Win

Shoots flat with plenty of velocity and energy to knock deer flat at long range or short range. Very little recoil in my opinion. Ammo is plentiful and common. Accurate.

7MM Mag... Same reasons as LandPirate.

Re: what calliber and why? - 11/02/10 08:53 PM

223, 270, 243, 30-06, 30-30 and a bunch of others, reason because I want to.

Re: what calliber and why? - 11/02/10 09:10 PM

I have a 30/30 (open sights) for tight spots. I normally use the Win 270 with Leo 3x9. Leave the AR223 for the piggies and yotes.

Re: what calliber and why? - 11/02/10 09:16 PM

I shoot a 7 mag. If I'm hunting an area where a long shot is a possibility, it shoots flat enough that range estimation is not as much a factor. It will also work for elk on my trips to Colorado. If the hunting is up close and personal, especially with smaller whitetails like in the hill country, I use the Remington Managed Recoil ammo. Those rounds have ballistics that are almost identical to a 7x57 Mauser, just a tad lighter than a 7mm-08. They are a pleasure to shoot and don't wear out my barrel as fast. The deer fall just as dead.

6mm Rem for deer/hogs cause I like it

300 wm for deer/ hogs cause it's cool, and I can reach out there IF the opportunity presents it's self

204 is my varmit/ tack driver also head shoot deer and hogs with it

223 I bought with hogs in mind it's fun to shoot

17 hmr it's fun to shoot and accurate... head shoot turkeys and coons

Remington 700 BDL .223 for the daughter and for me to plink around with; ammo is cheap

Remington 700 BDL .30-06, this is the gun dad bought me and good enough for anything from yotes to whitetail to elk to moose; can hand load from 125 grain and can use 120 managed recoil for whitetail, 150 grain for mule deer, 165-180 for elk, and 220 for moose or if I need to knock over a bus.

Remington 700 BDL .25-06 for central Texas whitetail, varmints, and I love shooting it flat, straight, and hits hella hard.

Remington 788 Carbine .243, is the first gun I killed my first deer with and dad would not give me his, so I bought my own. Love it, short for behind truck, enough knock down power, and I just love the gun.

Bushmaster AR-15 because it is an AR-15. That explains it enough, and the wife told me to get one once OBAMA went into office, because we didnt know how much longer I would be able to get one.

Also have a Ruger Super Blackhawk .44 mag for the piggies.

Anything in North America, but mainly because I love guns.

22LR - because its fun
22-250 - because its fast
25-06 - because I like to eat deer
.300 Win Mag - because I hate werewolves, swamp monsters,
Yeti, dragons, Bigfoot, dinosaurs, and any
other mischievious vermin up

My primary rifle is a 300 Ultra Mag.

I chose that caliber because I wanted a long range deer stomper. It only became my primary when I saw how accurate it was and the fact it has a Swarovoski 4x16x50 on top of it makes it even better.

I didnt really buy that caliber to use as a every day deer killer it just kinda turned out that way.

The truth is I would shoot a 270, 30-06, 308, or anything else if it was as accurate as this gun. The caliber I choose for a Whitetail is not as important to me as the accuracy of the gun I choose.

223 because ammo is cheap and they are fun to shoot.
243 Just because I can.
25-06 Just because I can.
30/30 because I think every gun owner should have one.
270 because it is the first gun my dad bought me (JC Penny 1978)
7 mag because everyone needs a brute in the safe

Soon to add a .17 or 22 mag to the mix

Re: what calliber and why? - 11/03/10 01:17 AM

7mm-08 is the go to, could be because of long histor with the gun and omplete confidience in it through much usage. Use a bunch of others but it is the main go to gun.

243 accurate, good starter gun for wife and kids to use.

270 wsm very accurate, great gun with a ton of upside, also the gun you use when someelse is using your 243.

300 win mag. when the other two just arent enough, nuff said.

i would say weatherby mag but at 68 bucks a box im out.

.17HMR is my favorite to shoot b/c I can shoot it all day long and it is super accurate. Not as cheap as a .22 but accurate way out past .22 range.

.270 for deer and hogs. I have many different rifles but I love the .270.

Re: what calliber and why? - 11/03/10 02:16 PM

lots of guns and lots of calibers. THere is a ton of redundancy in calibers today. So much overlap, that many essentially duplicate other's performance.

I think what it boils down to is finding a rifle you like.

I shot my first deer with a .30 carbine 25 years ago, and it was just as dead as the deer I have shot with a 223, 243, 12 guage slug, 30-06, 270, 7mm mag, 300 WM, 44 mag, etc....etc...

I've got my eye on a sharp looking little 25-06 and a 7mm-08 right now. Two completley different rifles....but for the vast majority of texas deer hunting, very similar terminal results.

Re: what calliber and why? - 11/03/10 02:21 PM

my deer rifle is a Ruger .270 winchester....because thats what caliber the ruger was chambered in when my stepdad and me went to carters country to buy a rifle.

I also hunt with a .22-250, i started killing deer with them when i was 11 and have ever since. great round, when used within its limitations

204, 223, 22-250, 220 Swift (all great prairie dog killers, my favorite is the 204, because of lack of recoil I can watch the entire pink mist scene without missing a beat in the scope)

308, 243 AI, 6.5-284 (great long distance paper punchers, my favorite would have to be my 243 AI because of it's insane accuracy)

270, 30-06, 308 Express, 30-30 (great NA killers, my fav is my 270, cause it was my first rifle and has killed a ton of critters over the years)

7mag (cause sometimes I like to yell "Magnum" to scare the critters just before I shoot them)

7mm rem mag, because my 30-06 was lonely in the safe...

30-06 because it serves me very well and has been doing so since I was big enough to shoulder it...

really wanting to add another rifle to the safe, thinking something 338. or larger... like the looks of the 375 ruger...

what ever comes next on my list will be because I NEEDED (wanted) something that is looked at as over kill

.22 CB caps and subsonic LRHP - for when discretion is appropriate
.22LR HP - for general rabbitry & armadillo control
.22 Aguila hyper-velocity - thrns my NAA mini into a good backup
.17HMR - for eliminating earwax in 'yotes
.30-30 170gr - here, piggy piggy
.30-30 LeverEvolution - for anything out to 250 yds or so
.357 Glasers - for unannounced "company"
.357 158gr solids - here, piggy piggy

Next is gonna be a Marlin Guide Gun in .45-70 - just in case I get up to Alaska to visit my kids, or to Africa to kill things that'll try to kill me if I screw up.

.308, best all around, no a whole lot recoil, will do anything shy of grizzly which we aint got in Texas...mags and ultra mags are a fad.

Re: what calliber and why? - 11/08/10 02:47 AM

.30-30 because I could afford in in 1969 for about $70 at the Medallion Store on NW Hwy in Dallas. It stopped the deer last year at about 100 yds.

Opening day I was holding, not shooting, my son's .308 because the blind I was setting on had from 100-300 yd lanes.

Re: what calliber and why? - 11/14/10 07:48 PM

Well lets see, I shoot a .223 because the ammo is cheap and its fun to shoot. I also shoot a 7mm-08 with reloads of 140gr Sierra GameKing and it does the job on most everything I hunt. I got a 30-06 that I shoot because, well, why not? I got a 300 Win Mag because it will do everything the 30-06 does but flatter and a bit farther.

But as to what I shoot and why. That all depends on the game your talking about and what I feel like using that day.

375 H&H... some people ask why... I ask why not...

Re: what calliber and why? - 11/14/10 09:12 PM

Like many folks my age I started with a sporterized milsurp Springfield 03A3 in 30-06 in the late 1960's. Then acquired a 243 SAKO that allowed me to learn how to shoot accurately and spoiled me forever about refusing to own guns that would not shoot straight on every shot, that I could reload for super cheaply. Lost more deer in the 8-9 years I owned it with that 243 than I have with ALL the other guns I've owned combined. Also won more money shooting thumbtacks with that 243 than any thing I ever owned too... 5 shot Center to Center 1/4" 100 yard groups off the bench at the old Winchester Range in Dallas were not hard to come by if I did my part 40 years ago ... shot with Lee hand tool loaded ammo off my kitchen table without even using a powder scale.

Since then I've owned mebbe 40+ deer rifles and killed game with most of them. However a I've owned more and killed more game with a 270 of some sort than anything else. I learned that I could pair a 270 & 300Wmg and not have to learn any different holdover drop tables as they shoot the same bullet drops out to 500 yards, and everything else in the safe was just another toy.

Today, after downsizing severely 6 years ago going into a medically forced retirement I settled on 3 calibers beside a couple 22LR's that I'll never sell or trade....and then had to rethink the deal after a major shoulder reconstruction that I had not planned for that was supposed to leave me as a cripple...NOT YET was my answer to the PT folks, since I had beaten a bad upper back & neck protruding disc issue with extended therapy 20 years ago and knew I could do it again...mebbe.
Today I currently own:
270 Tikka T3 SS/syn Lite w/ 3x9 @ 7lbs 4oz's total that seldom gets used except for spot & stalks for old time sakes or in rainy/muddy weather.
300WinMg Winchester M70 Classic SS/syn w/ 4x12 @ just under 10 lbs that is a bench or blind only queen. The factory weight forward Magnum barrel changes the point of balance dramatically and is a PIA to carry very far.
9.3x62 Mauser CZ 550 American w/ 3x9 BPlex as my "heavy" rifle @ 9lbs 8ozs total 'cause it's fun to shoot and scary accurate even in 250, 270 & 286 gr bullets that are way more comfortable to shoot than the 300 Mag is. The Burris BPlex reticle allows me holdover accuracy out to 3-400 yards and I get 3 rounds of 250's or 270's under an inch off the bench consistently. A buddy who hunts Africa a lot changed my mind from the 375H&H I was about to order to the old Mauser and he was dead solid right the 9.3 being tons more doable.

Then after the PT folks told me I was gonna be a cripple the rest of my life in Dec '06 and tried to prove it to me with an hour' sessionon their muscle stimulator that showed I had nothing left but mush for muscles and shoe leather for tendons... Stubborn Arsed me, I went and bought a replacement for all the soft kickers from 223 to 257Rbts I had ever owned before to start over with ...only in something real close to my fav 270 performance wise in a Tikka T3 Hunter Grade 6.5x55 Swede.
In 6.5x55, it shoots the same bullet weight ranges of 100 gr'ers to 140 gr'ers at about 2-300 fps slower than a 270 does, has better ballistics even at the slower speeds and kicks less than a 243 does in it's max bullet weight of 100 gr'ers... even in the 6.5's much heavier 120 & 130 gr'ers. My T3 Swede Hunter in wood/blue wears a 3x9x40 and weighs 7lbs 9 ozs total slinged & loaded, and I can shoot 50+ rounds of max loaded 120's off the bench wearing nothing but a T Shirt when a box+ of 300's or 9.3's leave me wanting to quit early even while wearing a Past Shoulder Protector with Pachmayer Decelarator pads on the rifles, heck even the 270 Lite wears a Simms LimbSaver to make it tolerable...but the Swede is still wearing nothing but the hard arsed factory non slip pad.
A Hunter's Happiness is getting blood on your boots again...was one of my Grand Father's favorite saying.

257 Weatherby. I love 25's they are fast and flat with light recoil. I shot a 25-06 for years then found this Mark V that fit me perfect. If I hunt where a 25 caliber is illegal or not allowed then I shoot my trusty 300 RUM. My 10 yr old son and 12 yr old daughter shoot the 257 and have no problems and are deadly accurate.

30.06 because my Grandparents bought it for me when I graduated High School (good motivation). I love the way it feels and shoots. It will drop anything I need it to drop. Also a wide variety of ammo to choose from.
