Soft Pickup Bed Covers

Soft Pickup Bed Covers - 04/04/24 07:14 PM

Are the soft pickup bed covers any good at keeping moisture off of stuff in the bed of a truck? There are some that fold 3 times and others that fold 4 times. Just wondering, as they are reasonably priced if they keep water out. Thanks.

I had 2 soft covers previously (not trifolds) and never had a problem with rain getting in. They were just a pain to roll up. I have an aluminum trifold now that's great.

I have an Extang Full Tilt. Mine is buit to be behind a cross tool box. Bought mine through Realtruck.com. I am not sure if this style is available now. Mine is about 7 years old, still in good shape.

I had a buddy with a 10 year old Extang Trifecta.

I would look at Extang. When I bought mine, they were built one at a time in Michigan.

I don't know anything about the soft ones. We put a backflip 3 panel flipper deal on our four-wheel-drive Tacoma years ago and it's held up well. Few hail dents but I'm not that picky. I would buy another one.

Same. 3 panel aluminum no-drill from Weather Tech. Not 100% weather proof but maybe 98%. I wouldn't leave feed in sacks back there.

How are they as far as security is concerned?

On my last truck I had one of the retractable roll up aluminum bed covers and loved it. It is spring loaded and only way to open it is to open the tailgate first, so if you keep your tailgate locked it's actually pretty secure. Of course it wouldn't stand up to anyone that is really determined to get into it. It was great keeping our luggage dry in the bed of the truck on road trips.

You do lose a little space up front where the "drum" sits but the trade off was worth it to me.

I have a rextrax roll up and it's only been a year but have been satisfied with it. As mentioned above you do lose bed space because of the drum, but that is ok. I do like that if I do have something that is above the bed I can pull it closed all the way up to where that item is sticking up and lock it in place.

I have had the roll up and kept stuff 85% dry now I have a tri fold works great can still hook up to my goose neck. My driveway is on a tiny incline maybe 10% and everything stays dry. If I’m backed into the drive I will get a little dampness on the bed. As for security a crow bar will have you in it in seconds.

Extang Solid fold 2.0. Yes it more expensive than any soft version but I snagged one used dirt cheap.

Extremely weather resistant, sits on top of bed rails so no issue clearing bigger coolers. You don’t have to flip it up to close the tailgate. With a 6.5’ bed I don’t have to remove to use my gooseneck hitch. However to totally remove it takes literately seconds.

I would not own a truck without the solid fold bed cover.

Also they can hold 700lbs or so on top.

The word is none of the bed covers are 100% waterproof. I did the power retrax and very happy with it. I fretted over the cost at first, but now I will never own a truck again without one. My truck is too tall for my short wife to manually open one, so I did the power one. Mounted the fob in the bed and also paired it with switches in the cab to open and close it. Despite what everyone says I was able to make my cover 100% waterproof with some extra effort. I added some RSI Ultimate Tailgate Seal everywhere I would have a water or air leak. And because the gap at the bottom of the tailgate creates a pressure difference in the bed, I added a RSI Rok Block seal at the base of the tailgate so that pressure difference would not be pulling water and gravel road dust into the bed. A soft folding cover compared to a rolling hard cover is like an apple to an orange both in function and cost, but those extra seals should help with any cover. If your interested in what I did, just ask and I will post some pictures of it.

With the available cordless grinders and saws, is anything secure? Soft covers remove temptations. Anything of value goes in back of my crew cab or in a tool box bolted to bed. Admittedly my truck parks behind fence with an electric gate, not in drive or on street.

Yes. My Weather Guard is pretty secure.

I used an Extang tri-fold on my GMC 1500 for several years. Very satisfied with it. Never had any problem with leaks. HOWEVER, if you're considering one be aware it can easily be stolen! Mine just "disappeared" one day, probably in a parking lot. Now, in hindsight, any thief with any knowledge of the unit can remove it within less than 5 minutes. It might discourage the thief a little bit if you have a tailgate lock on your truck and always have the top down flat against the tailgate. So, there went $400.00! Low-life thieves. Good luck.

Just put a Diamondback SE cover on my F150, like it so far and looks to be pretty secure.

+1 on these. Very easy to remove if you needed.
