Toronto police advise locals to leave car keys near front doors to avoid confrontations with violent thieves

'Home invasions and break and enters for auto theft occurrences rose 400 percent in 2023,' police say

As car thefts have spiked in Toronto, Canada, local police are prescribing new safety measures so that locals can avoid violent encounters with thieves.

One of the recent bits of advice included Toronto Police telling residents of the town of Etobicoke to leave their car key fobs near the door to avoid being attacked in their homes by potential burglars.

According to police, the number of car thefts in the city has more than doubled in recent years. In 2023, more than 12,000 vehicles were reported stolen. In 2019, just over 5,000 were reported stolen.

The people that make these laws and come up with these ideas, they hate themselves and they hate their home. And probably hate their citizens. It is self-loathing guilt-driven marxist bullcrap. They damn sure ain’t thinking about their kids.

Like said we are not permitted handguns in most settings. So this is what i use:

80CRV2 Tool steel. Full tang and sharp enough to shave with. Keep a set in the front hall and a set under my seat in the truck. Had some Jacka#% nearly run me off the road a few months back - flipped him the bird. Well once traffic stopped at a set of lights he gets out and starts swearing and gesticulating and wants to fight. I grabbed one in each hand got out and said you want to fight - fine. Told him I will not fight fair, rather i simply intend to kill you. He ran back to his truck like the scared bully he was.

No joke, the highest concentration of Asians outside of Asia. Toronto having the largest concentration and Vancouver pretty high too. Lots of theft and crime up in northern country. Been to both once, Toronto and Vancouver while working in Buffalo and Seattle, don't plan on going again, Vancouver was scenic but neither are my scene.

I've been frequenting a car forum recently, and car theft is so bad in Canada that insurers are requiring the installation of security or immobilization devices before underwriting the policy.

We pulled in to Halifax, Nova Scotia back in the ‘70’s and had a Helluva time for a few days.
Them ol boys could drink! I drank Moosehead beer for a while after that lol.
There’s more to the story, but can’t be told on an open forum lol.

This is an urban problem. I live 100 miles from the nearest large urban area and not required plus my auto insurance is 300% less than my sister and BIL who live in one of those hotspots. Then if you go north to my cottage nobody even locks their doors (200 miles north of Toronto).

East coast Canucks and especially Newfs are some of the most fun and most friendly people on the planet. Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan urbanites are decent folks as well. People from Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver - not so much - in fact they are down right ignorant for the most - classic nimby woke left wing manling citiots that prop up our communit leader. I actively avoid those parts of the country.

Fun fact: I was born on the AF base in Stephenville, Newfoundland in 59. My father was a navigator.

The same reason we have them here. To protect the criminal class from being gunned down in the street by the general populace.

Don't know if you have noticed but the authorities in many areas come down much harder on people that are likely to follow the law then they do on people that simply ignore the law. The most glaring example are Glock switches. They don't prosecute anyone caught with one in Cook County Illinois but imagine what would happen to you if you got caught with one. NYC won't allow me to carry but I did anyways when I traveled there. Had I used it in self defense I would be punished to a greater degree than the person I had to use force to defend myself or others from.

Edit: There was a recent post here that you commented on concerning HPD dropping a few hundred thousand cases simply because they couldn't be bothered to investigate them including a few thousand sexual assaults. Just imagine if one of those victims of sexual assault got tired of waiting for the police to do their job and took the law into her own hands and killed the man that raped her once it became clear that the police were never going to do anything to bring the man to justice. What do you think would happen to that woman? If criminals in the act of criminality could be killed with impunity how many repeat offenders do you think there would be?

You made a blanket statement about LE that was untrue. You are basing your opinion on the news and the internet rather than actual knowledge and experience. Sure, a person can cherry pick a few incidents in liberal areas but again, you made a blanket statement that was untrue.

Re: Toronto WTF? - 03/16/24 06:24 AM

It should not happen at all. The whole country, talking USA not Canada, is worried about the legal consequences of protecting themselves and their families. I sure as the heck am worried about it but I will do what i have to.

I feel like we should return to hanging horse thieves. Let’s make it auto theft. Hanged.

How many people would be car jacked in Canada if they started hanging people for it?

Nope, leave your keys where the bad guys can find them and maybe they won’t hurt you. It’s like making a bargain with a terrorist.

The more a bully gets away with, the more he will try to get away with.

If you cause the death of another person in Texas, a grand jury must be convened to hear the facts of the case. It’s in the CCP and has been for a long time. In FW during my career I don’t remember anyone wrongly convicted of causing the death of another person who was using deadly force in the commission of a crime against them or another. As for places like California, that’s why I will never put one foot into that state.

ntxtrapper, just for the record, in all those years you were on the Force, how many cases did you prosecute or how many did you drop? I'm guessing none unless you became the district attorney.

Why are some of you beating on the Officers about this? These decisions you are PO'd about ain't their choice. These are compliments of the hardworking politicians.

My comment was intended to be ironic humor that holds a ring of truth. I don't blame members of law enforcement because they are tasked with doing what they are told to do and don't get the write their own laws or set their own budget.

I decided from the start (the completed investigation) if a case would or would not be presented to the district attorney’s office. The exception was the CCP requirement for what I stated above.
