Squirrel Rehabber?

Squirrel Rehabber? - 02/27/24 11:01 PM

Anyone on here rehab squirrels? My age has gotten the better of me and I couldn’t toss them on the ground. Our county doesn’t show anyone on the states list so I’m not sure WTH to do with them. [Linked Image]

You go this route, and you are gonna have to update regularly. Has your wife seen them yet?

.22 caliber for the adults, babies make good coyote bait bolt

Re: Squirrel Rehabber? - 02/27/24 11:20 PM

Yep, easy to raise and some will stay somewhat friendly.
They sell the little baby animal bottle at feed stores, pet stores etc and maybe some formula for them, better than just milk.

She’s on her way home now and I’m sure she’s going to be beside herself but these things are going to a new home unless I can’t find one and I guess I’ll do what I can until they can do their own thing. The last thing I need is something else to take care of but my slaughtering days are well behind me and everything but a democrat deserves a fighting chance.

Learned a long time ago not to trust those fury rats.

Lived in an apartment on the second floor by the creek, lots of big cedar elms right by my balcony. left my sliding glass door open all of the time.
Had a mamma squirrel come on the patio all of the time, then she started coming in, like a dumb azz I started feeding her nuts she ate right out of my hand and would hang out for a few minutes.

Spent the night over at a girlfriends house and left the sliding glass door cracked so she could come in and eat the nuts I left out for her. hammer
Came home late the next day and my favorite chair was chewed up bang

They won’t return a call for poachers so I’m not holding out hope for a damn squirrel, found a rehabber in the next county over so if they survive until tomorrow they’ll be in better hands.

Yep, what they do. I just ran one off of my RV chewing on my awning. Can't shoot them here/eyes everywhere. I've got a 22 cal air rifle and 22 short subs that are itching for some squirrel.

Was just say'in, but know what you mean, should do good in a small box with warm material.

Make great pets tho, had a few in the 70's when we where kids, they get into anything and will near get you kicked out of the house for the chewing things.

Yea after hitting 50 my desire to be an animal slayer has diminished. I actually let a couple 2’ Iguanas go yesterday they pulled from the top of w tree and I haven't killed a deer in a while now barf I preferred being a killer lol but times change I guess.

We had a class squirrel in kindergarten, the teacher would let it run around the classroom. Then we had baby ducks for a short time.

Good for you O.T.

I trap nuisance rabbits in my back yard regularly. Can't bring myself to kill them.

Funny we will hunt animals, killem and eatem but when it come to this type situation I feel the obligation to help them survive.

Call it what you want. I call it being a good human.

Re: Squirrel Rehabber? - 02/28/24 07:03 PM

We found a wildlife rehab facility. They raise them up and do a 'soft release' where they can leave their cage. Eventually they leave and don't come back. If you try to feed them yourself then watch out for signs of pneumonia. It's easy for them to get. Symptoms are loss of appetite, lethargy, and a clicking noise when the squirrel breathes. Hold the squirrels chest to your ear and listen carefully. The clicking is with each breath, in and out. This must be treated immediately with antibiotics or the baby will die.

Good for the squirrels but the iguanas need to go. Invasive and muck up the ecosystem. Florida is overrun, just like with the boas and pythons.
