These bigger churches have pretty good security protocols. I would guess in Texas you’re looking at 5 armed people out of every 100.
More rural, that number goes up.

Houston police said the child was shot and the suspected shooter was killed

Two people were injured and one suspect was killed during a shooting at Joel Osteen's Lakewood Church on Sunday afternoon, Texas authorities say.

During a press conference, police chief Troy Finner said that the shooting began at 1:53 p.m. It happened at around the time that the Spanish language church service was scheduled to start.

The suspect, who was a woman, entered the church with a long rifle. She was wearing a backpack and a trench coat, and was accompanied by a "small child, approximately 4 to 5 years old," Finner said.

After she began shooting, off-duty officers at the scene "engaged" the woman and returned fire. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Once she went down, officers reported back to us that she threatened that she had a bomb," the police chief explained. "So we searched her vehicle, our bomb squad, and also the backpack [she brought].
"No explosives were found, but she was also spraying some type of substance on the ground."

Maybe they should check for green cards before they pass through the metal detectors.

Pretty tough (for a law enforcement official)call legally/lawsuit wise…maybe not this case, but if some nut job straps a kid on the front of his bullet proof vest, and is walking around with a AR blasting people….when do you take the shot??? They miss, hit the kid, the nut job gives up, lawyers, jail time, and bankruptcy all follow. What a mess we live in.

The news says the gun was legally purchased. This person was a criminal and had documented mental issues. His did he buy a gun legally?

Wasn’t a felony on record and lied about the mental health, that’s pretty easy to figure out OR the system flag as a hold and didn’t follow up on a timely basis. That’s about the only situations I can think of that would allow it…are there others?

A person has to be adjudicated as a mental defective or committed to a mental institution to be prohibited from purchasing a firearm. Those two findings are inculcated in a CCH but they are few and far between. The NIC system isn’t backed up right now so I doubt there was a hold that wasn’t followed up on. Most likely a bunch of misdemeanor convictions or deferred felonies.

I read the CNN report on the shooting, and nowhere was it ever mentioned that he was anything other than a woman…ever. Honestly, I only read their version to see what that version was. Otherwise CNN doesn’t exist in my world. Do they still show CNN on airport waiting room areas? I’ll ask my wife to look when she leaves for NYC on Thursday.

I think I read a while back where airports were going to quit carrying them. It was a big deal for CNN. 'Hope they continue to fail.

The cases were pled down to misdemeanors and the emergency mental detention doesn't meet the criteria for being adjudicated mentally defective. Based on what has been released, there's nothing that would have caused him to fail a NIC inquiry to purchase a firearm.

A lot of people are known to authorities but can’t be locked up forever because the constitution and our laws don’t allow that. He was mental app’d several times when he was found to be a danger to himself or others but a Dr let him go every time. As I stated above. An emergency mental detention doesn’t prevent a person from legally purchasing a firearm. The only way to change that is by congress changing the gun control act. That sounds like gun control to me so good luck figuring out how to make any of this better.
