Prayers for Matador - 06/22/23 11:32 AM

Tornado tore the crap out of it. We just spent the weekend at the Hotel Matador - great place and food. Thoughts and prayers to all.

The photos of the destruction are terrible. The town and the residence need prayers, no doubt.

Absolutely. This same system slid past us here in Sweetwater just before midnight -- constant lightning and after a 74-mph gust, we lost our local NWS station at the airport. Lots of chainsaw work today, but no burying, thank the Lord.

I've stopped there and bought a Mooremaker knife for a friend. Ate at the hotel too. Prayers for those folks.

We have friends in turkey that went down to help. They say it’s a miracle only 4 died. Apparently it went right down main st.

Two of my brother in laws are firefighters and they spent all night there doing search and rescue. They said it is absolutely horrible. A brand new dollar store was flattened. Bare slabs where houses used to be. Cars out in the middle of fields far away from any houses or roads, random engines out it the middle of nowhere. They said they couldn’t believe there weren’t more fatalities. Prayers for everyone.

Just talked to the landowner of our lease in Dickens, he bought 36,000 acres of the old Matador Ranch last year including the Ranch Headquarters with the hunting lodge and several other homes and structures He was there and was dealing with everything so he was short, I just told him they are in my prayers and would talk to him later. Sounds bad at this point but he did say no injuries.

I stayed at that hotel for weeks land surveying the Matador Ranch. That was 3 years ago. We did several partitions for that ranch land to sell to adjoining ranches. I was there last week helping to stake a new fence line. Prayers for those people. They were always respectful towards me.

Never heard of Matador or any thing about it

I thought this was a post about a THF poster named Matador

What happen in Matador? Is it close to Mexico?

He called back and said the Ranch entrance was beat up some and he lost a bunch of fence along the north side but no real damage to any of the ranches structure but his main ranch boss that works for him lives in town and lost his entire house, He and his wife realized they waited to long to make a run for the storm shelter so they had the grandkids get in the tub and they laid pillows and blankets on them and laid on top of them as the tornado completely destroyed their home. All survived.

He also said we had one come right down the highway in front of our place in Dickens. The folks from the Pitchfork Ranch fixed all the damaged fencing since they knew he was already dealing with the Matador issues.

That ranch boss has a lot to be thankful for. I'm sure they realize that. Nothing like grandkids to make you realize what's important.

Very glad to hear they survived that. Scary as hell.

Re: Prayers for Matador - 06/24/23 10:39 PM

My BIL is the ranch boss and the bath tub was probably the best choice. His home was a beautiful old two story brick house with a huge basement under it. If they would have gone to the basement they might not have survived as the whole house fell into it because it had no concrete top to support the weight. It also was partially full of water because when the water pipes broke all the water ran into the basement.

The outpouring of neighboring communities was unbelievable. Fire departments, ambulances and heavy equipment from all over showed up Wednesday night and Thursday and for the most part are still there. Skid-steers were too many to count along with excavators, dump trailers and dump trucks with people cooking food, hauling in semi loads of water and people picking up debris.

Numerous houses and barns are just slabs with nothing to move or carry off. No way to describe the devastation. A 16 ft. stock trailer literately rolled into a round ball. A custom riding spur completely flat like you set in on an anvil and hit it with a sledge hammer. A fortune in antique rifles, spurs and bits totally gone. I could go on and on.

Being there makes you appreciate having clean underwear, a toothbrush and toilet paper in your house because they don't even have those! But they survived and that is all that matters!
