Questions about vehicle hail damage

Questions about vehicle hail damage - 06/13/23 11:19 PM

My truck was in a major hail storm yesterday. It's a 2018 GMC SLT 4x4 Z71 with 45,000 miles. There is not a body panel that is undamaged. The windshield is busted and A pillars have deep dents. Even the chrome steps are dented. With current OEM parts costs and body work costs, I am curious how likely the insurance company will total it. If they do, can I buy it back for continued use. Have other members done this? Would it have a salvage title. I appreciate your input.

Likely totaled and yes will likely have the option to buy it back. Salvage title. I have a coworker who goes to auctions this time of year solely for the purpose of buying these hail damage totaled vehicles.

I know the dealers dont discount their hail damaged vehicles very much. Surprises me.

They’ve always done PDR on my trucks in the past but if you had baseball sized hail it’s possible they total it but I’d be surprised. I’ve had golf ball sized on several different trucks and they wrote a check to fix them and I pocketed the money and used them as is. I’ve also bought a few back from the insurance company after they were totaled so that’s an option. The title will be a salvaged title if they do total it but who cares, it’s cosmetic and not mechanical.

Thanks, I've had hail damage in the past on other vehicles, but nothing like this. The hail was hen egg size and very hard and a lot of it. It was a crazy storm.

Hopefully they total it and you can buy it back id that’s what your wanting to do but if they do total it and you end up not wanting it let me know, I might be interested in buying it from you. I’m looking for a good truck and looks don’t matter,

I'm in Pampa, TX in the Panhandle. It is a solid truck and never in an accident. It is the SLT Plus trim with LED lights, chrome package, factory bed liner and fairly new Michelin tires. Depending on insurance, I torn between keeping and driving it as is or getting another.

My truck took tennis ball size hail back in December. Cracked a tail light, break light, windshield, and obviously dent on the body. My truck is a 2014 Ram with 200k miles, it was totaled.

My Sequoia was totaled but I kept it and got the delta (vehicle worth minus salvage value) and I do NOT have a salvage title.

Last year the insurance company totaled my truck and I bought it back. They changed the laws in Texas on salvage title. My title is clear, car fax will show that my insurance company called it a total loss. (I believe a salvage title is now only when there is frame or water damage but don’t quote me on that)

Worst part is your driving around with liability insurance in a world full of idiots without insurance.

The problem with buying it back with a salvage title is insurance companies often don't insure they for comprehensive and collision afterwards.

yep, biggest concern about buying it back would be only being able to get liability insurance ... way to many idiots without insurance these days roaming among us ...

I have never purchased a salvage vehicle, but I would think resale would be something to consider once you're done with it. No dealer will buy it and most individuals will shy away from it, as well. I'm in auto finance and we won't issue financing to salvage titled vehicles. So it would need to be a cash paying individual who is OK with purchasing a salvage titled vehicle.

Which is someone that will never get insurance and use fake dealer tags, there’s plenty of those out there so the sale should be easy .

Hopefully, that is a thing of the past with Abbott signing a bill into law banning temporary license plates in Texas. It won't be active until July 2025 though.

Re: Questions about vehicle hail damage - 06/16/23 05:16 PM

You'd be surprised what they'll fix. Mine got beat up pretty bad a few years back, about the same mileage as yours, Basic '18 Chevy 1/2ton 2wd, they replaced the hood and the entire roof, then PDR'd the rest of the dents out. Which was all fine with me because between the time I bought the truck and it got the hail damage truck prices had gotten stupid, now they are just insane.

I still had paper tags when my 2015 got hit. Took it to the Ford house who did a perfect job fixing it. Total was about 8k.
