I want to plant some peppers Jeremy !!!

I want to plant some peppers Jeremy !!! - 06/05/23 01:24 AM

Jeremy is our resident expert at this craft. I have a large planter pot full of good planting materials. Rabbits ate all my Sweet Potato Vine plant. Thought I would grow some mild peppers for pickling.
What am I looking for and anyone have any good recipes? Like grandma used to make.

Froggy is the man when it comes to peppers. He has a good mentor.

You don’t want Frog’s peppers. His mildest is a HOT habanero. But I do think a chocolate habanero would make a good pepper jelly along with the Lemon Starrburst

For pickling I just grow regular old jalapenos. The recipe is not as important as the method.

Please don't cook the peppers in the brine.

Hot banana or hot hungarian wax peppers is what I use to pickle.
50/50 water/vinegar mixture....a little salt and boil. Let cool most of the way and pour over sliced peppers packed tightly in clean jars. They will keep like this for a long time in the fridge.

Do I buy seeds or starter plants?
Posted By: topwater13

Re: I want to plant some peppers Jeremy !!! - 06/05/23 03:15 PM

I always buy start plants. Hard to get pepper seeds to germinate without adding heat.

Re: I want to plant some peppers Jeremy !!! - 06/05/23 05:36 PM

Every year I swear I won’t buy starter plants but end up buying a few. So far the serranos are bell pepper heat. Time to start stressing it out.

Buzz, what’s the hottest pepper you enjoy?

I’d say it’s too late for seed, but these grow tents are pretty slick nowadays. It’s what I used to start mine

I bought some plants. Jalapeno and Banana. Hope the rabbits don't like them. Any other enemies of pepper plants?

I can't do the heat you guys do.

What we have here is a rabbit problem.

Re: I want to plant some peppers Jeremy !!! - 06/05/23 07:19 PM

I have a squirrel problem so I put chicken wire cages on my pots.

A heating pad is great for starting seeds on the hot peppers. Put it under your seed starter setup.
I've grown ghost peppers, scorpions, and 7 Pot dougla.

See if you can find a Shishito pepper plant. Low heat if any. Great pepper that is typically panned blistered. I've had a pickled one. I think that could be interesting/good.

Squirrels don't bother anything in my garden. All my peppers are from starter plants but one of the jalapeno plants isn't a jalapeno plant.nidea

Bullfrog where do you buy your hot pepper seeds?
I get most of mine from NMSU Chile pepper institute.

Stupid squirrels like to cut the plants off near the soil if I don't cage them. They don't bother the tomatoes though, go figure.

TX Hot and White Hot are two of the top seed guys. Both are great to do business with. TX Hot also last a large tomato selection.

I buy 2 Mammoth Jalapeno plants every year from Lowes. They make plenty for me and the wife. They are just starting to produce but they will produce for about 3 months. She makes jelly and cans a few jars every year. I love them fresh. When they turn purplish or red is best.

Agree on that ripe stage. Almost a brownish purplish color for jalapeños, serranos, pequins.

Won’t be guaranteed to be what you think they are unless they’re isolated during its life cycle

Jeremy is the growing master, so not to steal any of his thunder. What he has taught me is the mother plant will produce the same plant/pepper over and over if started by cuttings.
BUT If you start seeds from that pepper for next season they are not stable because Peppers and other vegs are openly/self pollinated. So your Jalapeno might cross pollinate with say a bell pepper or a Scorpion for that matter. So next season seeds from that pepper aren't guaranteed to be the same.

do bugs bother peppers? What do you use to treat or am I overthinking a plant?

Mites can and will eat on a pepper plant. Look for ants. If you have ants it's because they eat mites.

Re: I want to plant some peppers Jeremy !!! - 06/26/23 05:32 PM

OKay, they are looing good

When are you supposed to pick them?
does soil dryness/wetness affect "heat"?
bigger, hotter, or smaller?
Posted By: Derek

Re: I want to plant some peppers Jeremy !!! - 06/27/23 04:31 PM

Depending on the variety. I grow Jedi jalapenos and they produce 4-5" peppers, so I pick them when they are the 4" range. Drought stress will cause the increase of capsaicin. The one study I saw the increase was like 25-30% if I remember correctly. Pepper plants do like to dry out some between watering. They can being really dry for sometime and bounce immediately back when watered. I don't recommend letting them go that far, but it happens. The first pic is one of my starters that was in the back and wasn't getting watered by accident. I noticed it and watered, The pics are 12 hours apart. Bullforg has a pic doing this yesterday to a large plant.

I wouldn't put a lot of stock in the accuracy of the Ph on that meter. No biggie. The moisture part of it should be pretty good though. I use this digital one. Seems like it's been pretty accurate.
