I have a friend that has a '68 Mustang and got some unused '68 plates that have "Hemisphere '68" and was able to use and registrar them on his Mustang.
If the plates are old you might could sell them to vintage vehicle owners.

They are all from the 60's and all kinds car, truck, farm truck, tractor. short trailer, long trailer, bus. My mom and dad bought a house in Eastland in the 70's. There was a old falling down shed on the property and I got to digging around one day and in the back were a lot of boxes with plates with tissue paper between them. Turns out that the lady who owned the property and had passed was the county tax assessor for 4 years and any plates that were not issued were stacked in the shed and it fell down around them

Big money in some plates, like 1934, for ‘34 roadsters. I think 2 are needed for them to be able to register.

How old?

That’s actually a little piggy bank. If they have the year on them they will sell. Grade them based on condition. Load up and go to a classic car show and get a table. The last pair I bought was $45 for good condition 1972. That was several years ago.

If you register “antique” I think you only need one plate. I have a set of the ‘68 Hemisphere plates on my ‘68 Bronco. Not registered as antique. I just had to get the plates approved in person before they let me use them.

Re: Old unissued Texas License plates - 01/30/23 01:28 AM

There is a guy in Gainesville that travels all over selling them.

I wouldn’t know how to find him but, it sounds like it’s worth the effort in your case.

Wow depends on the years but they are worth some money. They will range in price from 10 to 100 dollars a set. you can go to ebay and search sold plates and get an idea what they are worth. In my next auction I will be listing a matching set of 1934 plates and a single 1936 plate but they are in bad shape.

Re: Old unissued Texas License plates - 01/30/23 02:15 AM

My wife got me a beer koozie made from an old license plate, which was a cool idea. Just wrapped around some foam. It was poorly done so I don’t use it much, but with a little thought and planning, it could be done properly and would make for a nice novelty gift. Shouldn’t be too hard.

Well if you have a 69 GTO I already have a dislike for you! LOL That was my dream car in my younger day.

If I remember rightly I think all of mine are 65 and 66 but I will check in a day or so. If I find a 69 I will donate it to the cause!!

I miss the old texas plates with the Space shuttle, cowboy on horseback and oil derricks.
Even the ones that came after those were better than what they issue now.

Dad collected old ones. I have a good condition single '36 (TX centennial), several from the '20s, and one black, wooden board with large numbers individually nailed into it. eek2

Re: Old unissued Texas License plates - 01/31/23 12:44 PM

Texas used to swap back and forth between colors each year when you had to by new plates annually. In the '70's some are white with red letters and some with green. There was a time when the switched back and forth from white on black to black on white. When I was a kid, the regular plates had black letters but the personalized plates had blue. I have a 1974 (birth year) with red on white and the old tag off my Chevelle the last time it was registered...it's a Sesquicentennial plate with no renewal stickers (front). I also have an unused windshield renewal sticker from 2004 somewhere. Registered the car and never applied the sticker or drove it again.
