Fort Davis, not Eureka Springs

Fort Davis, not Eureka Springs - 07/09/22 11:51 PM

I had planned for the wife and I to go to Eureka Springs for a week or 10 days of cooler weather. Well, it isn’t going to be cooler there at all, so off we go to Fort Davis. Highs just over 90 degrees and lows in mid 60’s. Been a while since we were there. Any suggestions on what to see and do. Probably we’ll stay at the Davis Mountains State Park. Maybe stop midway at the Menard County RV park. Any decent food in Menard?

No help on the food. But if you have not done the Highway 90 drive, I would go that way just to stop at the overlook at the Pecos river. Last time we went it took 2 hours to leave the overlook area behind us. Some great breathtaking views.

Stop in balmorhea and swim in the spring. They have a fantastic Mexican restaurant as well.

Eat at the Harvard . Had dinner there last night. One of the best burgers you anywhere.

We did the Hwy 90 drive a few years back, so will take a more northern route for this drive. This trip will take us through Balmorea, and the wife has packed her swimsuit. I know she’ll want to see the swimming hole. As for food, we’ll give the Harvard a try. And we have a Star Party reservation. Last time we were there for a Star Party we almost froze. Heck, I want to almost freeze. That’s the whole point of this trip…to cool off, if even a little bit.

I’ve even gotten a bit excited about this drive. Between my surgeries and my wife’s surgery and the virus shutdown, I think we’ve canceled at least 10 RV and TT trips. Maybe more than that. The road calls me…

The loop drive is a good one too. It's 166 off of 17 all the way around to 118.

We live off 166 at 6000 feet. It’s 70 at my house right now. Enjoy your stay!

We are really looking forward to it. The youngest daughter has a place at Angel Fire, but I don’t want to drive that far.

I love that area…

As mentioned, stop at balmorehea springs on the way in. First time I went we stopped for a visit and ended up snorkeling for four or five hours, so if you have snorkel gear, bring it…

I’ve eaten multiple times at poco Mexico on the outskirts of town. It’s cheap and simple but delicious.

I definitely recommend the star party at the observatory.

Might need to check and see if Balmorhea is fully open. Pool repairs are done, but they were doing complete sewer system overhaul?

I’ll check. Haven’t told the wife about Balmorea yet.

The drug store in Fort Davis has amazing milk shakes. Foods not bad either.

The Drug Store is under new ownership and is having big problems. Hopefully, they will be able to get it worked out.

Ok, swimming at Balmorea will happen, and we’ll pay extra for snorkeling. Side trips include Marfa and the skyline drive. And the Star Party and tour the old fort. And I wonder if the snake place is still open. Might stay a few more days. No rush to come back to the heat. Neighbor’s kid will watch the place and feed the cats. The road goes on forever…

Open for any other suggestions on what to see and do.

Dang, hate to hear!

Snake Shop is open. He’s a good friend of ours. Marfa will either thrill you or sadly disappoint. Lots of masks. Eat lunch during the week at Poco Mexico. Take cash. The folks at Dodgson’s guns in Alpine are great. It’s owned by the Sheriff.

Sign us up for Poco Mexico. The wife says she wants the combo plate. Definitely we’ll go there.

Menard has a place called the Lazy Laddle that is pretty solid. We have land there and we always eat there when we hunt.

We love Ft. Davis and Alpine, great bars and places to eat and hike, my wife and I go every year for a couple of nights over Christmas.

.

The lazy ladle is closed more often than it’s open. Not bad food but cannot be counted on to be open.

The Mexican food place on the north side of town is good, hole in the wall that last time I ate there was cash only, but it’s good.
