Best Okra variety? - 02/02/22 07:23 PM

Well due to a couple of requests I am going to grow some Okra. Which one tastes the best and finishes fast.

Well I have been growling a garden for 40 + years . I have tried some of the new varieties but it's hard to beat the old standby , Crimson spineless. It's not red and it's not sting proof but it's the only kind I grow .

Re: Best Okra variety? - 02/02/22 07:47 PM

Thought about it and the one called Zeebest. Might grow three or four kinds. The plan is they want to pickle the Okra, I like it once in a while sliced thin, battered and fried.

I love me some okra...the slimer (sp) the better. Love popping those seeds in my mouth!

Man I am craving gumbo now!

Not sure on variety but my wife uses the young, small okra and steams it in a covered pan with butter and salt and pepper.

dang it's good.

I was given some red burgundy seeds last year. It was really good. Huge plants and produced a ton of okra.

I plant dwarf long pod variety. Plant matures at shoulder height. Don't need a ladder to cut okra.

I dont know if it is the real name but my buddy in Oklahoma plants what he calls.cowhorn okra.

They were well over 12" long and curled about like a half circle.

I just knew they were going to be woody they were so big, but they were as tender as the baby okra we used to pickle. Hands down the best okra ive ever eaten.

I love okra and have been growing it all my life, lots of different varieties.

I was given a mess of cowhorn okra last year and it is now my favorite, fried up very tender for being so big. I've got a bunch of seeds put up that I'll be planting soon.

x2 on the Clemson Spineless Okra. makes dang good pickled okra; I like eating them raw too.
Don't let them get longer than 5" - or they won't fit in your quart jars.

For foolproof pickled Okra, I use the MRS.Wages 'Kosher Dill Pickles' mix (makes 7 quarts),
plus I add 1/4tsp crushed red pepper & 1 tsp fresh minced garlic (to make it 'zesty'), (and 1 split Jalapeno pepper/optional for some heat) to each quart jar:

Cowhorn shouldn't be curling like that. That is my favorite variety to grow.

Also, okra is great raw, just pick it, wash it, eat it...or grill it.

Yes, but I also grill lemon cucumbers (regular cucumbers aren't as good grilled), so I might be a bit odd. confused2

Re: Best Okra variety? - 02/03/22 04:10 PM

Okra is pollinated by bees, and will cross pollinate. If you are planting several varieties, you will get a mixture, not just one variety. If you want several, plant them as far apart as possible.

I grow okra to eat, can, pickle, and sell seed. In Texas, you can't beat OLD Heirloom Clemson Spineless. Many of the store bought seeds today are GMO versions of the same plant.

As mentioned aboce, grilled okra is very good, cut the stem, slice long ways. I use very light olive oil in a baggy and shake it , then add a little Tony Cachere's or my french fry mix, and shake it again, ... It is also very very good on the smoker, same prep.

While I was taking Environmental Science in college, my professor who happened to also work at Blackland Research in Temple and a PHD, had developed an okra pod that doesn't get hard even when it gets long. The stalks also get approximately 10 ft tall. He gave me a coffee can full of seeds. I've grown some and they aren't too bad. The hard part is getting the stalks down for me to pick.

Well I started these a bit late this year due to being busy with a family members health problems, the seeds you sent me. They started just fine but the heat and no rain caused the plants not to put on so I just let em go without being watered for a while. The grasshoppers ate them up killing two of them but they kept a little top on them up til the recent rains. I did water them a bit through the hottest days. However just since the recent rains they came back strong.

I have some okra that I grow every year. No idea what the variety is. I got the seeds from my granddad. He called it "Mississippi Okra" pods are probably twice the diameter of clemson. But they stay tender. I'll be glad to share some seeds if someone wants them. Just PM me. Pay for a shipping label and they're yours.

All okra is good. It's in the prep that makes some better. Fried okra using bacon grease and cornmeal is great. Pickled okra with jalapenos is also a great snack.
