USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 - 01/16/22 01:17 AM

1984: The carrier collides with a surfacing Russian submarine in the Tsushima Strait, leaving the sub's propeller embedded in the carrier's hull.

But now She is on her way to Texas to be dismantled and scraped. flag salute

This is all that's left of my boat. Was on top of that sail pretty often as "lookout"

Everyone on ship received one of these certificates. Had mine framed and is hanging on the bedroom wall along with a photo of my ship as we crossed that specific spot.

Re: USS Kitty Hawk CV-63 - 01/17/22 01:52 AM

They used my ship for target practice. Took quite a bit to sink her.

"New Orleans was sunk on 10 July 2010 during the RIMPAC 2010 exercise. The ship first sustained direct hits by at least seven Harpoon missiles. After the Harpoon strikes, B-52s from 2d Bomb Wing and 5th Bomb Wing dropped five 2000-pound GBU-10 precision bombs. As the ship began to list, a joint force of the five participating nations – United States, Japan, Australia, Canada and France - struck the ship with the majority hitting above the water line. The most damage came from the Australian HMAS Warramunga (FFH 152) who hit with three of the seven Harpoon and over 70 five-inch shells. New Orleans rolled on her side and sank at about 6:15 pm 70 miles north-west of Kauai."

I've crossed more than once, never Navy though. On the way to Africa from the Gulf of Mexico. We stopped and had our ceremony at 00.00 / 00.00.

00.00/00.00 is the only place you can cross and be a Golden Shellback. Were you in the merchant marines? DD835 Charles P. Cecil is the ship I was on when we crossed on the 19th of March, 1969. Luck was with us as we had flat seas for the initiation.
