Ford VS Ferrari / Carroll Shelby movie - 02/07/21 03:24 PM
Carroll Shellby was an East Texas boy raised in Dallas. He was a winning driver in the 59 LeMans. Partnered with Ford who produced perfomance cars with his name.
Watched "Ford VS Ferrari" last night.
Storyline follows Fords entry in road racing with Carroll Sellby designing and Ken Miles at the wheel.
Good flick. Long, but if you were a gearhead in the 60s, or followed the sport, a worth the sit down.

Great movie. Reminds me of when my Grandfather took me to see Apollo13. When we left I said how great it was.
He looks at me and says, “it was much better in real life, I lived it”. Always thought that was cool.

I was worked a gas station in high school. A guy pulled in for fuel in a real Shelby. He let me watch him check the oil and tires. He hit the key, it sounded like a 400 HP pocket watch and he was gone right now.

He had his chili business on Highway 5 in Mckinney back in the late 70's and he had the original blue Shelby GT actually in the office building - a severely bada$$ machine! Mr. Shelby was in there himself on occasion and was an affable gent...

I liked how the movie portrayed Mr. Ferrari, particularly in the rain at the track. Classy.

In reality, he was not at the LeMans race.

I have a buddy that has a Cobra. Took me for a ride once. Wow! When he punched it just a little bit that thing practically leaped off the ground.
He said it was very expensive to maintain.
Once, on the west loop in Houston, near the Galleria, I was heading north around midnight. Not much traffic at the time. I noticed a Cobra in a lane to my left. I sped up to have a look, but the guy punched it, and he was GONE. In what seemed like just an instant, he was out of sight. Incredible.
I did enjoy the movie. I wasn’t expecting to, but it was great.

The Cobra club has an annual gathering here for the last several years. It’s usually the first weekend in April.

The best engine and car builders are self-made engineers without a degree.

I liked that movie a lot. How many people in his position would have foregone the engineering resources that Ford had, and used grease monkey type guys who really knew what they were doing to beat the world's best cars. Fascinating.

Actually while those grease monkey types were important Ford's engineering resources were also. The dynometer testing to insure the engine would hold up and the quick change brake system were two items that required Ford's resources.
