Christmas Star - 12/21/20 05:35 PM

Saw it last night. Had to use 10X Binos to see both planets. Pretty cool, Tonight is the night for direct alignment.

I think he meant 25* looking to the Southwest. That is where I have been watching it, it is really bright to the naked eye, but with magnification you can see both planets.

You’re in a good spot to see lots of horizon over there.

Re: Christmas Star - 12/21/20 10:44 PM

I should have looked last night, it’s overcast today

Re: Christmas Star - 12/21/20 10:55 PM

Supposed to be only 10 degrees above horizon to SW around 6:30 out here. Might be an issue due to the large trees.

Re: Christmas Star - 12/22/20 12:01 AM

Not far above the W/WSW horizon right now. Probably be gone by 6:30.

Re: Christmas Star - 12/22/20 12:02 AM

You can see them before you can see stars.

Thanks for the pro-tip. We're headed out now...

Re: Christmas Star - 12/22/20 12:04 AM

Using my spotting scope from about 30x you can see the moons of Jupiter and the rings of Saturn in the same view. They're moving pretty fast, at higher magnification you don't have it in frame for long.

I took the kids out to look at it.

I explained that is what the 3 Wise Men followed to find baby Jesus.

Re: Christmas Star - 12/22/20 12:47 AM

Been watching for 6 months

It/they were dimmer as they got to conjunction............no way that is the jesus star. Very disappointing as far as brightness

Re: Christmas Star - 12/22/20 12:59 AM

Took my son out and he got to open his new telescope he got for Christmas early.

The conjunction was kind of lack luster and seemed we missed them close together because they seemed to be moving further apart. But man the moon is beautiful.

I got the spotting scope out and had neighborhood kids over to view it. At 40x could clearly see the rings around Saturn and 3 moons around Jupiter. Pretty cool.

That’s cool you did that

It was plenty high in the sky here and you could see both planets with the naked eye plainly. Looked even better through binocs. Overall I was underwhelmed.

Yeah inagree. Was watching them the last couple evenings and just expected them to be more “on top” of each other, but they never were. They were the closest to each other last night, but still noticeably separate.

Quite underwhelming. I remember seeing haleys comet and that was cool. This was not that

Re: Christmas Star - 12/22/20 08:34 PM

I climbed into my deer blind last Friday(12-18-20) @ 6:15 a.m. and there was an extremely bright star/planet just coming up to the east. I actually stopped and looked with my binos for a bit. I think it was Venus. I had not noticed it being so bright before. It was very bright to the naked eye.

Re: Christmas Star - 12/22/20 11:45 PM

I tend to think that the "baby Jesus star" was a comet that was documented by the Chinese in what we now call 5 BCE. It was so bright it made the stars dim and lasted for 70 days. It also moved in the sky over that time. Fits the bible narrative much more closely.
