Re: RIP to a Rock Legend - 10/06/20 10:20 PM

EVH was one of my faves.

Here's my '83 Ibanez that I sort of paid homage to Eddie with design and tape!

Addendum: Regarding the "free Dallas show" in '91 at the West End.
VH was supposed to play a previous show in 1990. Sammy Hagar was sick, so they promised to play a free show the next year. I was working at DART at the time, and as the crowds grew outside the DART building, I realized what was happening.
I went to eat lunch at Spaghetti Warehouse, which was next to the steps of the West End. That is where the band set up and played.

Some of us DART employees watched the show from the top of the DART building a block away.

Addendum II: I was a huge DLRoth Van Halen fan, not so much a Van Hagar fan.

Thr Jimi Hendrix of my generation. Reinvented the instrument.

I'm so glad I got to see him in his prime with the original lineup it was January 26, 1984 in Jackson Mississippi. I never forget the guitar sound to unchained when they opened the show and Roth jumping off the speakers behind the drum kit doing splits in the air. And at the end of the show right before happy trails Valeri Bertonelli brought a cake out for Eddie's birthday and they all ran around the stage sliding around in it. I was about 15. Eddie was 29 that day.

Eddie loved and lived to play. Amazingly underrated rhythm player.

The loudest concert I ever went to was Van Halen for their Diver Down album in the early ‘80’s at the Baton Rouge Assembly Center. One of the best I’ve seen... I did prefer Sammy vs Diamond Dave.

I was 11 when 1984 was released and I listened to it nightly on my record player. True artists who actually played instruments and made real music. Eddie had a sound all his own and made guitar solos such a part of the 80’s. It was a great time to be alive. May he Rest In Peace!

Van Halen was the opening act for the first Texxas Jam and they were the head liners for the last Texxas jam in 1988.

Van Halen’s “Jump” was at the top of the charts when I was in jump school at Ft Benning. Everyone was playing it all around the jump school.....

Re: RIP to a Rock Legend - 11/19/20 04:03 PM

I should start a new thread but I will put this here.

I listened to this interview with Eddie Van Halen from 2017 and was really impressed. He and his brother were the true American success story.

The parents immigrated from Holland to the United states with $50.00 in their pocket and no English speaking skills. The father was a classically trained musician and insisted that Eddie and his brother learn piano. The story develops from there. They learned English, formed a band.....tried to get record deals and were constantly turned down. They were undeterred......they passed out fliers, hung posters etc advertising their gigs at bars, back yard parties etc. They worked their butts off and slowly gained fans and started playing larger venues. At this point the recording studios finally saw their talent and the rest is history.

The guy is really down to earth. If you have a few minutes take a listen.

1988 was Monster of Rock Tour, not a real Texxas Jam

They did have some great bands for that Tour.........
