Need Help Finishing a Mount

Need Help Finishing a Mount - 02/28/22 04:32 PM

As you guys know, Dave Dooley passed away. Absolutely a loss.

I have a mule deer cape and antlers that he was going to do a pedestal mount for me but didn't get to it. The cape was done by him and is in my freezer in an airtight bag. I have the antlers as well. Can anyone provide me with any direction as to where to take it to get it finished? I also have a cow elk hide that he scraped and salted as well, but it may not be salvageable, I'm not sure.

I'm in Rockwall. Thanks!

Give the hair on the cow hide a tug and if it doesn't pull out you're good.
Moyle Mink and Tannery in Idaho does great tanning, $209 for taxidermy tan on an elk hide, I would ask about intact fur dressing for that cow elk hide.

Specialty Leather in Boone, IA does fantastic hair-on or hair-off leather. Earlier this season they were at capacity and stopped taking hides but I think they are again receiving hides. They have done dozens of hides for me over the years and I’ve always been impressed with their quality. Very professional outfit that is well respected in the industry. My boot maker pointed me in their direction more than a decade ago when I wanted some boot leather from and elk I had shot.
