Cape handling mistake?

Cape handling mistake? - 11/14/18 12:33 AM

I killed my first elk three weeks ago. It’s nothing tremendous, but it’s a 6X6 and and an elk, and a first elk! I can’t afford to have it mounted, but someday many years from now it may be my only elk, or it may just be the one that started it all. I intended to freeze the cape. I got all my meat processed and in the freezer and went in a mule deer hunt, then got home and realized that my cape has been in the spare recrdigeratoe for three weeks. It has a bit of an ammonia smell, but the hair is still firmly on the hide. Is the cape still usable? Thanks in advance!

I would say not. But you can always get another cape from your taxidermist.

You can’t always get a big bull cape. Nice racks mounted on does and cows always look like crap.
