Anyone cook up Deer ribs?

Anyone cook up Deer ribs? - 10/08/09 09:08 PM

So I tried cooking up some last night. I boiled them for about an hour. Put them in my smoker for 45 min with a nice home made bbq sauce making sure to keep them moist at all times. Then finished them off on the grill just long enough to brown the surface.
And after all that, they still were as tough as an old boot. mad
The flavor was delicious but way too tough. Has anyone seccesfully cooked deer ribs?

I've tried it, almost like you did and they were not all that great in my opinion.

Putting BBQ sauce on any kind of meat makes it taste better LOL

OVER COOKED!!!!

Thats why they are tough

Boil 5 minutes then put BBQ sauce on and put in the oven/smoker for 25-30min at 350

the boiling loosens up the tissue and does the majority of the cooking, the oven/smoker is just to brown and make the BBQ stick.

alot of work for little meat, I like to leave the rib in and do a bone in chop some times.

we always try to leave as much meat on them as possible, cut them crossways then we salt and pepper put flour on them and fry them slowly in a skillet............hard to beat!!

BBQed mine many times, but with around 250 degrees and would baste/mop every 30 minutes for 2 hours. Sometimes if they aren't fat enough, we drape bacon slices over them.

My dad used to just season them and throw them on the pit and smoke them for a while. They would always be a great snack for the people cooking. I really like the membrane off the back. It was a little crispy and had all the seasoning on it!!!!! It was kind of like jerky.

There is a classic recipe "Ed Wuori's BBQ deer ribs" ....somewhere. It comes with glowing reports, but I never found deer ribs to be worth any effort atall.......there is negligible meat on them.
