supper vs dinner

My old man is almost 80 and were from the hills of far upper east Tennessee. To him, if you eat late eve/night thats called supper. if you eat sometime around noon thats dinner.

My wife is always wanting me to take her out to "dinner" at night. What say yall...whats what?

To me supper has always been the evening meal only. Dinner could be either noon or night time meal.

Never heard of a painting called The Lords Last Dinner.

I have supper at the evening meal here at home. When I used to have to work with the "city types" and we went out to eat in the evenings it was called dinner.

Interchangeable to me. Both are evening meals..

But no one eats dinner at noon.

Growing up dinner was lunch and supper the evening meal. Now lunch is lunch and dinner is the evening meal. I hate change.

When I was a kid I saw on television shows they were calling the evening meal dinner. I ask Mom about it and she said that is what City Folks call Supper.

We do not have Thanksgiving supper of Christmas supper. That is dinner I guarantee it and there is plenty of food to go around.

We don't either. We have Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas dinner and it's at noon.

I know, confusing right, but that's the what mom said so that's what we did. Why you ask...Sunday and Holiday (Lunch/Dinner) are more formal thus they became Dinner/Supper. Still doing it today...

This is true, but for us they are, Thanksgiving and Christmas, both mid-day meals.

I grew up it was lunch or dinner @ lunch then dinner or supper in the evening. Now its lunch at lunch and dinner in the evening. Never lose sleep over what a meal is called as long as I get to eat when it is time to eat.

I now call it dinner. We called it supper when I was growing up.

When I was a child we had breakfast, lunch and supper most days.
Dinner was a large meal on a Sunday, usually later in the day than
a typical lunch due to preparing it after church but earlier than would be a supper.
Same for holiday meals like Easter, thanksgiving and Christmas.

Now that we got sophisticated I guess we don't say supper
because we don't want to sound like a bunch of Hayseeds.

Come to Mimi's Cafe in Marietta or Rear of the Steer in Omaha, and the majority come in at noon for their dinner meal.

supper is the last meal of the day

rooted in farming traditions of having a large dinner break mid day and a smaller supper in the evening

lunch is the citified equivalent of a light (supper) mid day in place of a large (dinner) meal mid day

Some of us have changing schedules. I eat whatever the heck I want whenever I want. So there's that.

Haha! Not hardly. Notice the time I posted it. I usually eat lunch at 11 everyday. This was about 10:30 so I called it brunch. Really it was just time to eat.

Speaking of City folk. It's breakfast lunch and supper in my part of the woods I was raised in. Dinner was special meals on special days like Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.

But don't city's have alot of 'country' folks nowadays cause the farms are dried up?

This but I tend to use "dinner" if I'm going out somewhere and supper if I'm eating at home or the fire station.

I kinda use them interchangeably. When I first met my wife, she kinda scratched her head at me. I knocked on her door and said "It's bean time, ya ready to go eat?" She thought we were really going out to eat beans. Laughing!
