My outdoor kitchen is coming along

My outdoor kitchen is coming along - 02/24/13 01:41 PM
I decided to build my own outdoor kitchen. I've got it all framed, pluming ran, gas line in, now its time for rock, counter tops, and some outdoor cookin!
Ready for rock:
I've bought the rock and all the kitchen equipment. The kitchen will have a Primo XL cooker on the lower flat space (left center), an AOG dual power burner (for cajun boils/stock pots), on the elevated flat section right of the primo area, a Swiss 36"/6 burner gas pit on the right side, and the rest is workspace/sink on the left.
Just thought I'd share.

Re: My outdoor kitchen is coming along - 02/24/13 05:43 PM
If work ever slows down & I have a life again, I'm gonna build me an outdoor kitchen. I have a 15' X 45' concrete slab in my back yard that used to be a huntin' dog kennel. I've been doing a lot of thinking about how I'm gonna do my outdoor kitchen but haven't had time to do squat. That lay out looks great! I'm jealous....

yes, please keep us updated with pictures. I have an old kennel area that might work well for something like this. Hard to tell from the one picture above, what are you framing & skinning with?

Re: My outdoor kitchen is coming along - 02/26/13 12:51 AM
I am framing with 20 gauge galvanized 2 1/2" studs, typically used in commercial buildings and skinning it with 1/2" hardibacker.
Believe it or not, I've only got about $385 into the project at that point in the picture.
Its the kitchen equipment....holy moly. Doors and drawers are silly expensive.

Here's a pic of the gas pit:
It's a swiss grill, 36" model with rotisserie and IR burner
Here's a pic of the start of my rock work:
I'm doing 100% of the work myself, so the rock is taking some time. It has been really fun learning and working as I go.

The rock work isn't too bad. I've never done it in my life, so at first I was slow. Now I'm starting to get the hang of it and its moving along. The dry stock method takes so much more time because of the how close you have to keep the stones.
It's darn messy though.

I am seriously thinking of trying a project like this myself. Thanks for the write up.

Re: My outdoor kitchen is coming along - 03/01/13 03:06 AM
More rock work done today:
I'm learning to not focus on such detail with the drystack method. I'm learning to just fit the largest pieces i can and then back fill as needed. Probably another 2-3 days of work to get the rest done. It takes lots of time.

Yes. I think it will be the best thing. First I want to pressure wash all the rock surfaces and clean my patio off.

Re: My outdoor kitchen is coming along - 04/05/13 12:03 AM
I think after I finish the backsplash tile (behind the dropped portions and under the bar top), I'm going to frame out all the stainless objects with a 2 1/2" dark brown tile, stuck over the rocks. It will frame out the stuff and fill some of the gaps from my bad cutting skills (lack of experience).

Re: My outdoor kitchen is coming along - 04/16/13 01:20 AM
Robert, Does the Primo Grill work any better than the Big Green Egg?
A Primo owner would say yes!! A GBE owner would say the opposite!!
I think the primo oval has better accessories and useable cooking area.

Re: My outdoor kitchen is coming along - 04/16/13 12:02 PM
Robert, Does the Primo Grill work any better than the Big Green Egg?
I have a BGE, but envy the Primo's for one reason. The Primo has a firebox divider, and split grate. Therefore, you can add wood in the middle of a smoke, or move things around to different temps.
With the BGE, it's more "set it and forget it". Now, having said that, i've haven't had a single problem with my BGE. Haven't had it long though.

Re: My outdoor kitchen is coming along - 08/09/13 12:53 AM
Thanks! We've used it at least 3 times a week since I've built it. People love to just hang around it while I cook, which was in the entire reason I built it.
Who ever decides to go down this path, just make sure you have plenty of counter space to serve outside. I've hosted multiple events now and have been able to keep all the food, drinks, apps, and PEOPLE outside the entire time. Which has saved me cleaning up my entire house after a party. In fact, lots of times, I'll serve the food right off the grill.

Honestly, soon. I need to cover it with a pergola to keep most of the sun off the granite. It's already bleaching it out.

Re: My outdoor kitchen is coming along - 08/12/13 01:03 AM
RM - you don't cut the rocks, to just rotate and test fit them until they go together. Sometimes you have to use the back of your chipping hammer to knock off little corners and such to get a bigger piece to fit.
