dog sprained ankle?

dog sprained ankle? - 11/02/09 07:48 PM

so yesterday my dog got into trouble. tore a hole in my carpet in my son's room. i chased her outside, and she actually leaped over my back fence. the fence to my house is made of cinder blocks, and is only weist high, but there is a 5 foot difference between my back yard height and the alley behind the fence. basically, when she leaped, she fell about 8 feet.

dog hit the ground and yelped, and picked up her front paw. i figured i'd take her to the vet today, but later last night she began to walk on it again. it is NOT swollen from what i can tell. i can handle her and she doesn't pull it away, yelp, bark, or make any noise for that matter. doesn't seem sore to the touch. I figured she just bruised it or something as she was beginning to walk on it more and more last night.

Well, today, i wake up to find her not walking on it at all again. still no swelling, and she lets me touch it without issue.

My vet doesn't have an opening until friday. you think i should just wait till then or should i rush her in to the emergency clinic? please keep in mind i just found out i'm losing my job and things are a bit tight.

If it were me I would go day-to-day.

The fact that she doesnt yelp or pull away when you are playing with it as well as no swelling seems to suggest nothing is broken. It could just be a sprain and a few days of rest my remedy the situation.

If it doesnt get better or you notice some swelling, pain, or as if it is getting worse..then go to the ER.

Just went through the same thing with Zeke.

I took him to the vet as I figured it was broke from all of the yelping and whinning he did. Vet x-rayed and called and said he thought it was just a bad sprain. Couldn't find anything broken.

Anyhow, it was about $115 visit and he gave hime some pills to take for 5 days to reduce inflamation. We are on day 7 and he still favors that foot in the morning when he is stiff. Also, he is still not 100% when he loosens up. Doc said it will take 3-4 weeks to heel with no major activity (running/jumping). Longer if i don't make him rest.

thanks for the advice guys. txfour, it's exactly what you are saying. in the morning, she won't put it down. by about 4 pm, she's walking on it a bit...still hopping, but she'll put weight on it. i think i'll wait a week or so. thanks for the advice. i had a feeling that some people on here were going to bash me for not taking her in right away!

I would wait a few days and see if it gets better, If its broken its not going to get better in a few days anyway. I have kept a few of those anti-inflammatory pills around for my dog when he gets hurt. I think a horse stepped on him a few days ago and I gave him a pill. Within hours he was walking again. It also has a pain killer in it too. Ask your vet for extras. Anti-inflamatory works best if used immediatley.

No problem. To be honest, the only reason I took him, is I have been training him myself and feel like I had too much in him if it was broke to wait and let him do more damage.

looking back and listening to my wife recall the situation, I should have waited.

She said, we have two kids that you have never even gotten up with, much less slept in the floor with when they were sick. LOL.

wow... our wives must be related. smile
mine was like "if you're not going to take her, I will take her... but she's MY dog now, not yours!" this is coming from the same woman who told me 2 months ago "we don't need another dog"
