Texas Trace is good but they have a long waiting list. Terry Tomlinson just had a litter. She's located in Oklahoma.

Be patient I just got off the phone with her, nice knowledgeable lady.

She called. Very nice lady. Very knowledgeable I think I will stick with a Cocker pup. Boykins must be for rich people.

Terri is very knowledgable about the breed and she breeds quality dogs. Boykins are still a relatively new breed and are pretty rare in Texas. They definitely are not a bargain buy if that's what your looking for but with that being said it's like most things in life, you get what you pay for.

With Terri or Texas Trace or any other quality breeder you are paying for a pup who's parents have had their hips, eyes, EIC, elbows and heart checked and have been cleared for breeding. You know your a getting a dog from healthy parents and the chances of you getting a dog with bad hips or eyes or anything else are slim to none. That's why they are priced as they are. You can go the bargain route and get a $600-$800 Boykin but you run the risk of getting a pup with bad hips from an inferior breeding.

This is my 3 year old Boykin opening day of dove season this year. He is a machine in the field just don't miss any birds or he will let you know about it. A Boykin can double as a great little waterfowl dog, upland flusher or blood trailing dog.

If you think she's expensive, don't call TX Trace. These dogs carry guarantees. The only thing keeping me from putting my money down (and I'm not rich) is my ill tempered GSP who won't tolerate puppies. I just have to wait till he's taken the last hunt that never ends and I'll probably get one.

Do your homework. These are great dogs. Need to look at the breeders and be sure they are following the breed standard. Most quatily breeders only breed a couple litters a year thus the limited supply of pups. Here is my 14 month Brandywine " Gun UP" radier.

How do they tolerate the heat in the dove field being that dark colored?

Lots of water. Just like all the other dark dogs. I also put a summer trim on Radier during th hot Texas summer. They will go all day long. You have to stop them. They aim to please.

I love my Boykin. He is one of the most intense dogs I have seen in the field. Keep him hydrated and he will hunt all day ( so true about you having to make them stop). Great size for a house dog as well. Don't plan on getting one of any account cheap around Texas. I had mine shipped in from South Carolina where they originated, and it still wasn't cheap. You pay for quality and health clearances/guarantee. I will say that I feel like I have gotten my money worth and have only had him two years. Do your homework and you will be very pleased.

Re: Boykin Breeders in Texas - 10/12/14 06:38 PM

A boykin from Texas Trace is worth the wait and money. In the long run a 6-12 month waiting list and the initial investment is almost negligible to the overall 12+ year relationship. If you hunt your dog as you should your costs of vet bills, training time, boarding, gas, training gear, food etc will end up being much greater than your initial investment. That said, they are worth every bit of it. Some great advice I received and seen play out is that when buying a hunting dog is not the time to bargain shop. I can't say enough great things about my Boykin and Texas-Trace.

Been looking at getting a Boykin myself. I've only researched and already love the breed. I've not read a single negative comment on any site or source I've looked on.

I want one so bad but like was mentioned, the money is the issue...

I like the breed but they are not the easiest to train. They also are a very "busy/active" dog.

It depends but expect somewhere between $1200-$1500 for a quality breeding with all the health certs. Titles don't matter as much with Boykins as much as Labs but it's deffinately a plus.
