Proin side affects

Proin side affects - 08/09/14 08:18 PM

Any of you have negative affects of this drug? I am forced to use it because my 3yo GSP has developed spayed incontinence. Vet told me 75mg once a day. From what i have read the norm is 1-2mg/kg. She is about 22.5kg. I think i am going to try 25mg twice a day and hopefully decrease to 25mg once a day eventually. She will be on this the rest of her life. Fortunately it can be found cheap online. Not sure why he instructed me to give such a high dose but i a going to use the least amount needed to be affective.

Blaze had this problem in her sleep a couple years ago. I don't remember the dose but we did reduce it on our own to find the smallest dose that was still effective. We started just forgetting to give it to her sometimes and noticed she was not having accidents so we weened her off it to see what happens. No more problem so we stopped the drug. Don't know what was up with her, but was aware she should have needed it the rest of her life. I don't see what harm there would be in your situation either with experimenting to find the smallest effective dose.

My dog is four and I've given it to her for three years. No side effects that I've seen. Though I have noticed that when I don't give it to her she seems more anxious kind of like she's afraid she might dribble. She weighs 45 lbs and I give her 50mg a day

Proin (phenylpropanolamine) usually has to be started at a higher dose to get the incontinence stopped. Once your dog is back in control of its bladder, you can start tapering back on the dosage. It's not unusual for many dogs to do well at low doses even every other day, but most will have to take some for the rest of their life. So don't hold your breath expecting that your will be able to stop it altogether......if so, then you would indeed be lucky.

Side effects are pretty common early, but they generally go away after a few days.....panting, restlessness, some hyperactivity.

The best drug I ever used for post-spay incontinence was DES, an estrogen drug that was once in common use in dogs and people both. But the (serious) side effects in people, breast cancer being one, caused the drug to be taken off the market. Low doses of DES would generally work miracles in spayed dogs with almost no side effects.

It's human nature to make mountains out of molehills. IME, post-spay incontinence is quite uncommon, certainly less than 1%. But if your dog falls into that 1%, momma ain't gonna be happy. Fortunately, with drugs like Proin and DES (compounded, of course), it is easily and cheaply treated.

The issues surrounding unspayed dogs--twice-yearly heat cycles, pyometra, breast cancer, and such--make spaying a no brainer. The only practical reason for NOT spaying a family pet is if the dog is valuable for breeding....and even that is an argument that's tough to defend.

Spay away, and don't worry about it.

Re: Proin side affects - 09/02/14 02:33 PM

Is is caused from lack of hormones (due to spaying) that are used to control & contract the ureters sphincter. So urine will leak out, usually when relaxed sleeping. My dog sleeps in her crate so I just slide the tray out and clean it, no big deal. But the proin works, no leakage since giving it to her, and thats with a 1/3 of what the vet prescribed. One can get a 6month supply for less than $40 online. But I am going to try without it and see what happens starting tomorrow. Would I still get her spayed? Yes but I would have waited until she was at least a year old and had one heat cycle instead of 6months. I only have one hunting dog, so I can't take chances with her going into heat during season. Plus there are health benefits for the dog. But if you research, you will also find there are health benefits of not spaying.

Started our cocker on it last week...I've seen her dribble twice since and it wasn't nothing like it was before. Thanks for the tip, didn't know this was even an option and the last time we mentioned it to the vet they thought UTI and put her on two rounds of antibiotics. Seemed to help a little but nothing like this has.

Thanks...I'll update the post if it changes.

initial diagnosis was also UTI for my dog. Havent gave her proin for a week and only one leakage episode, that was the second night off of it. Here is a link with the cheapest price ive seen, if you need it long term. http://www.kvsupply.com/pet-supplies

Re: Proin side affects - 09/11/14 12:06 AM

Sorry to hear about the issue with your dog, I just bought a GSP from Wild Rose in Seymour he almost did not left me leave with her until I agreed to wait until the first cycle after she is 2 to get her spayed, that's going to be HARD to do. He was explaining that this is one of the major side effects in GSP of spaying early. he also followed that up with, but your vet will tell you to do it at 6 months, so they can later sell you meds to correct the issue. The way he talked it will fix this issue over time with meds, just take time.

good luck hope all goes well

Thanks magspa...

KS big arse deer....I'm sure the vets are not making enough on the meds to drive a decision on when to spay. That is tin foil hat wearing stuff there smile . I've had 3 dogs done at 6mo and before their 1st cycle and this is the only one that has experienced this...the vets are just playing the odds and allowing people that don't want to experience the mess not too. Thanks for the well wishes and enjoy your pup...I hope she finds many birds for you!
