Brittany Spaniel?

Brittany Spaniel? - 01/31/14 12:33 AM

This little pup happened upon the house yesterday. Pretty sure he's a BS.

No collar, immature male intact, sweet. He has a handful of ticks so he has been wondering around for a few days. I'm not sure but someone could have dropped him at the church (I live next door) because people assume we have compassion on animals since we are christian (we do have compassion on all of the Lord's creatures in a sense). So, I called the local vet, no luck. I'm going to take "Hank," who is now laid up in one of my daughters beds, by the vet to see if he is chipped. Outside of that, not sure what to do. I guess if nobody comes by we'll take him in permanently, after he's fixed, female alpha Vizsla already on the scene along with the wife's pound rescue.

May as well keep him.

Hard to tell but he looks like his hair is too short fora Brittany. I've been known to be wrong.

Nice looking critter and very confused looking in the pic. Very Lost for sure.

With a coat that short he is a very young pup umm 8-9 +/- months old. Got his frame and shoulders in and should stay about this size. Full coat won't come in until a 12 months or older...and most likely will be a short variety but not smooth coated like a pointer or lab that he looks like right now in the pic. Otherwise he is not a purebred if he grows up slick coated.

BS's Should be a soft feathery coat, longer on top and longest on the backs of his legs.

Is his tail docked? or uncut?

Thanks for the comments.

I didn't get a good pic of him but his coat is growing on top and it is about three to four inches long on his hind legs. He is still a pup as the above post states; he's got that awkwardness about him. Sweet little guy. Taking him to the vet this morning.

His tail is docked

It does look like a young Brittany (the AKC removed the Spaniel from the name almost 30 years ago - a spaniel is a flushing breed & a Brittany is a pointing breed) Hope you can find his owners.

Yep, sure looks like one. I would see if he is chipped. I work with Brittany Rescue and would be happy to help get him in short term care while the owner is found if needed. Number one goal should be getting him back to his family. Let me know if I can help.

What part of Texas was he found?

Just read the rest of your post and saw that you are willing to take him in if the family is not found or he doesn't have one. That is great. I sure love Britt's and hate to see one on hard times.

Took him to the vet this morning. Got him vaccinated and wormed. Vet said he might have a year on him. Bought him a collar.

No chip or tattoo.

I live below Bossier City, La. I think we might keep him if no one shows up to claim him.

I'm having a bit of a problem with Dixie, my female Vizsla. She acts like she hates him. Am I doing something wrong. How should I go about this so that she will get along with him.

Give her a few days. If he is a young pup she is probably just putting him in his place in the pack. Ignoring the behavior has always worked best and it is best if they work it out between themselves. Sounds like she is the leader of the pack and is making sure that he knows his place.

Let me know if you continue to have problems and I will be happy to help with more suggestions.

Re: Brittany Spaniel? - 02/04/14 04:32 AM

Hey yall,

I'm sitting in a hospital on death watch with one of my church members.

Update on the pup.

He's doing great and all three dogs are getting along much better.

Wife gave him a bath tonight and a good combing.

She said he has a lot of burn marks on him like cigarette burns. No ticks and a few fleas.

Cleaned him up real good. He's in the bed with my oldest son, who is 11. He has already turned out to be a great dog.

Buying some quail this week for the V but I will also see how birdy he is.

I'll keep you all updated and will try to send some pics and vids.

Be sure that you introduce him to gun shots easily. Might be the reason he was on the run when he came to you. So glad he has a great home.

Best Dog, I ever owned was a Brit. Was going to get another one for my Girls first dog. Instead one of my Wife's friends Springer had pups and we got one of those. This was two years ago, absolute worst dog I have ever owned. I would give her away, but it would break my 8 yr olds heart. Wish I had stood my ground and got another Brit. Super dogs!
