First blind build with kids

Posted By: HuntCrafted

First blind build with kids - 05/29/14 08:21 PM

We got our first box-blind in place over the weekend. We have 4 tree-stands in-place but with the kids getting older figured it was time to get them involved! Took about 6 hours total. Built the frame at home in the garage then hauled it all out to our land. Adding the door & windows in the next few weeks.

Kids had a blast!

Looks great. Hang some no pest strips in there and you're set.

Well played getting your kids involved. Y'all did a nice job. I'd highly recommend Deer View windows. up

Ha - I actually created my openings based on the Deer View measurements - planning on a 48x10 up front and 24x10 on the sides - all flipping up out of the way. Any suggestions/tips for install? looks pretty easy...

Put some windows in it or you will have a big owl house.

Looks great! Nothing like having your kids get out in the woods and start working on projects like this!

That is the best looking crew that I have seen in a long time. They did a great job.
Ours will be 5 years old in a couple of weeks and he HELPS ME A LOT. He helps with everything.

I have a daughter about that age, she is not interested at all. My thirteen son on the other hand laid his first bead, welding on the blind we have in work.

Yep. Be sure and guy wire that thing, or run t-posts down each leg and strap them down with wire. Other than that you're good. up

Re: First blind build with kids - 07/22/14 01:48 PM

about how much did you put in that cost wise

Re: First blind build with kids - 07/22/14 01:54 PM

Not much - the roof, framing and deck-blocks were all left-overs from friends projects that they needed to get rid of. My offer of "have truck - will haul away" worked out well. I did buy the siding & paint which was just over $100 total. The kids I found on craigslist... grin

what my father and I did for our 7 ground blinds was to go to a carpet store and buy leftover cuts of dark (black, brown, dark green) carpet and tack it in. has worked like a charm for a number of years and I second the "no pest" strips - a definite must here in Texas.

good looking stand and bravo on getting the kids and dogs out there.

Good idea on the carpet scraps - will give that a try!

Re: First blind build with kids - 12/02/14 08:13 PM

Just following up since the season started - the blind has turned out to be the best spot on our property this season. I took a 9pt and my buddy took a nice 8pt. Only bucks so far from any of our stands/blinds.

My son has also found a good use for the blind...

Really nice, and cute kids. And you have better paint than I do. Normally I'll just combine the paint leftovers from the last couple of stand paint jobs. Usually works fine, but the last stand is now turquoise. Dang.

I have a "spot" like your sons in my blind too LOL up

Re: First blind build with kids - 12/04/14 05:06 PM

yeah - it has been warm this season - lots of naps in the blind.

I just got cheap Home Depot paint and a few camo spray cans. The kids held branches up to make our pattern. And of course made a huge mess which is half of the fun!
