how high would you lift a 4x8 blind? - 08/09/13 01:28 AM

Does 12ft seem out of range if I use the steal elevators? This is a wood blind and self built. Base is made of treated 2x6 and 2x4's. framing is 1x2's with plywood. It will have 2x4 cross beams and eye bolts attached to the base and anchored into the ground with t-posts and cable. I'm concerned about wind. It's in archer county and the with gets pretty bad sometimes. I don't want to put in all this work building it just to go out opening weekend and find it blown over and broke.

Getting it up in the air going to be tough if it is not built to be taken apart and put back up on the standing tower. That blind is going to catch a lot of wind up that high once it is stood up. I would dig each leg down about 2' into the ground. I would also use a very long trailer house anchor in the middle and guy all 4 corners to it with steel cable. I would probably also guy all 4 corners out about 30' away from the blind to another anchor for each corner.

Here is a blind I built out of a shipping crate. I believe it was 5x8. I used the elevator brackets and 8ft posts. It was a struggle to get this thing in the air because it was heavy. We used a winch attached to a bracket that hooks to your receiver hitch ball but it wasn't quite stong enough to pull it up by itself.

It is built to be taken apart and put back up. Thanks for your input.

DLRZ, How long has your stand been up? Have you had any strong winds and did you anchor id down anyway?

I have an old 4x8 blind that's about 10 feet up. I have it wired and braced from all directions, but I'm taking it down real soon and replacing it with a 'storebought' fiberglass blind that'll be 10 from blind floor to the ground. Now...if I can just work up the energy to do all that has to be done...

I don't know if I'd try to get a wooden 4x8 blind 12 feet up. I might be a bit nervous in a high wind.

I dont know why the height would be a problem. I have several stands that are 24' to the floor of the stand. They have been through many 70+mph storms and no problem. Now I wont sit in them when there is a big storm coming, but nobody in their right mind would. As far as anchoring them, I just go out to about 50 or so foot out to the best tree to each corner and tighten it tight with a ratchet strap or come-a-long. As long as they are anchored properly then the wind will not be an issue, and they will be sturdy to shoot during reasonable winds...

It was up most of last year. Lots of stong winds but I am kind of in a draw so not getting as much wind as if it were on top of a hill. It did blow over one of my feeders but the stand is still standing. It is cabled down to an earth anchor on both sides. Just make sure you check the cables often.

Mine is 14' to the floor. I found a hackberry tree and topped it and erected my stand on top of it and guy wired it to the stump. After 20 years no worries. Hackberry tree needs trimmed every 2 years or so. Can't kill them and a large track hoe might dig them up.

I think you could build as high as you want to as long as you anchor it sufficiently. I would use auger anchors with the eye at the top: one for each corner, mounted at an angle some distance away from the stand, plus two for directly underneath the stand. auger them in and then run steel cable to them. Use turnbuckles to tighten the cable. As the stand settles, you can adjust tension using the turnbuckles.

From past experience, mark your cables and the augers with surveyor ribbon. The only thing worse than tripping over them in the dark is running over them with the truck in the dark.
