Question about sloped roofs....

Question about sloped roofs.... - 05/02/12 07:21 PM

Hey guys, I'm working on plans for a deer blind.

How big of a deal is a sloped roof if you plan on using a metal roof with overhang?

It makes things a lot simpler if you can just have a flat roof and not have to make a bunch of angled cuts in your framing.

Thanks for your input.

If you don't slope it a bunch just stay with straight cuts. It wont be off by much

I ussually put a 3" slope from front to back. Get your plans and take them to Home Depot or Lowes and you can have them make the majority of the plywood cuts for you. For Example if building a 6X4 with 6'6" front and 6'3" back.

3-6'6" you will have to put pitch on the two sides
1- ripped in half 24" then have them cuto 1-6'6" front and 1-6'3" back.

I build them in pannels and off-set the studs.

I build mine with metal frames and i do not slope them. Never had a problem. You can see them in link below.

i didn't slant the roofs on my stands. i do recommend putting a little silicone on the seams where the sheets over lap. mine do collect pineneedles.

Sloping the roof is no big deal.I have made several and I am not a very good carpenter. I like the roof to slant enough to not have standing water.

4" slope toward the back, no angles cuts framed with ripped 2x4s. Saves on material & weight. (make sure the door will open)

I have built them with no slope with no problems. Just seal the roofing nails/screws/seams real well and put a plywood under it.

Easier to build that way and if sealed well they will last a long time. especially if in the dryer parts of the state which the last few yeats is all of it.

I like the slope bc heavy rain will wash off the leaves & pine straw. I take roof & stand seperate to its set-up and use 1x4 slats for the roof and abhor it all together with 3" drywalls with a rubber backed washer. Keep the siding painted if in the elements, no matter what it is, hardie board/OSB/ply it will swell or warp if the humidity is there.
