55 gallon drum corn capacity - 07/30/11 10:24 PM

How many pounds of corn will a 55 gallon drum hold? How much will a steel funnel decrease the capacity? Thanks for the help.

5-50lbs of corn, a funnel is a must, or you will have all kind of problems.

I can generally get 300 lbs. in but it goes all the way to the top.

While a funnel might be a good idea (not knocking it dgilbert), I've never used one in 20+ years of using 55-gal. feeders and never once had a problem. Now, a good lid is a must.

Been using corn feeders bymself and with my dad since the mid 80s, never used a funnel and never had a problem. Of course I have never used them where humity was ever a huge issue, so you have to take that with a grain of salt. 300 lbs for me.

Thanks for the help guys. Anybody have any good ideas for a varmint guard? I was thinking of building one around the spinner. Kind of a box design.

Bearkat - go to the Academy on William Cannon/I-35 and get the Everlast Varmint Guard (folds into a flat square when not in use). THey are $19 on 3rd shelf up on back wall. They are great.

They also have low profile plastic funnels. I have one in mine. By getting one you will eliminate possibility of any mold issues due to little leaks and humidity. Its worth the price and piece of mind and will not decrease capacity more than 1/2 to 3/4 of a 40lb bag. At the price corn is right now. I would put no more than five 40lb bags at once unless you are positive nothing is going to tump it over, etc.

And if you havent bought corn yet - when you go to academy have them price match corn at Dicks on Been Cave.

No knocking, just cheap prevention, just saying.

My thought on the funnel is they cost $15-20. You won't ever use a bag of corn worth of corn in the corners making the corn funnel so to us we have had plenty good success without.

i usually almost get 350 lbs in mine and it has a funnel and i like the funnel cause you don't have corn build up in the corners of the feeder all the corn goes down but to each his own

+1, dont waste your money on a funnel, Put that money into a good varmit proof spinner plate, motor, timer, corn etc....

I can get about 300 lbs in mine but I have a funnel. I like the funnel because corn doesn't get stuck on the sides and I have an access panel on the bottom side of the barrel so I can keep my battery in the empty space below the funnel. Varmint guards are a must no matter where you are hunting. Good luck!
