Cold weather glove recommendation

I like the dexterity of my Sitka gloves, but they do not cut it for cold weather.

What glove recommendations would you make for dexterity AND warmth. I know there is always a give and take. For how cold, consider 1st or 2nd rifle elk season in CO.

I've been looking at trying First Lite, but open to others.

Buy some gloves that are not made for hunting, esp given the rifle hunt aspect of it.

There are plenty of snow skiing gloves that are awesome compared to their camo counterparts. Hestra, serius, many others.

Also, something to consider is a liner glove with a mitten over top. Lots of ways to skin this cat, but don't need to think only hunting lines for the answer.

Good answer above. Skiing and other winter activity gloves will be warmer.
Saw some folks wearing a pair of these gloves and they said they were great for skiing and hunting. Look pretty pricey though.

I have all but abandoned big bulky insulated fingered gloves. I will wear a light-midweight shelled glove with a very lightweight but warm liber glove underneath. The shell glove only gets worn if that hand is exposed/outside my pocket. Otherwise I just wear the liner glove and keep my hands in my pockets 90% of the time with those 18 hour hand warmers in each pocket. It has solved my cold hand issue completely.

If I wanted a dedicated warm glove though…mittens will always be warmer than fingered gloves.

All the gloves for Sitka, First lite, Kuiu etc are all exact same materials as most ski gloves. All use the same or similar technologies just broken out into different price points and temperatures.. also some of those gloves are just utility meaning protection(rocks, torns etc) more then for warmth



OP, what you want is just going to be a personal preference. Dexterity and warmth arent always synonymous.

I can tell you I normally carry two types. A fleece with a wind blocking layer and mittens(I have an array depending on the hunt. They range from: leather, goose down and wool).

Mittens I have and recommend :

mountain hardware absolute zero(light weight mountain hunts, they are $$$$)
giv’er frontier leather mittens (all around tough, warm and water proof- I also ski in these)
Cabelas standhunter (absolute warmest but very heavy and big enough to add hot pockets, these are my hunt fro
Tree, truck glassing gloves)

Mittens are very easy to take off

TRW - My habit has been the same... to not waste time with the gloves, to wear a light liner, and to use hand warmers in my pockets. But I'm looking for other options

Best thing I ever found for my hands were hand warmers and pockets.

A lot of gloves today, while they may protect from wind and rain, they also do a really great job of either constricting your circulation or sucking the heat right out of your hands. Suggest you get the thickest gloves with the least dexterity you can stand and buy $40 worth of hand warmers off of Amazon each season. I've done this the last few years and my ENDLESS quest for the perfect glove ended. I really don't think the perfect glove exists anyway.

Just got some of these and they are the best of both worlds to me. I wore them two weeks ago when we were in single digits and outside all day, and they were fantastic.

I bought the most expensive Sitka gloves (without the flip-over mitts) for a goat hunt in SE AK last October. They worked, until I started climbing and putting my hands on all the brush, moss covered rocks, etcetera, to haul my old fat azz up and over all...that...mountain. They got soaked and still, after multiple washings, still smell like goat. The guide, who was young, and female, and slim, used cheap fishing gloves (with liners) that theringworm on here turned me onto. 27, 28 bucks. She wore them the whole time. And...she rocks. 5/6mm neoprene fishing or diving (wetsuit) gloves! Fingers stay warm even if gloves/hands get wet (melting snow)! $12 -19 a pair !

In addition, you can put handwarmer packs - not in the palm area, but on backside of hands - and fingers will stay toasty warm.

I've learned that no gloves will warm cold hands. They just insulate the cold in.

You can put crappy gloves on warm hands and go out into the cold and your hands will stay warm for a long time.

For situations where gloves will be on and off, handwarmers or a buddy heater will be about the only way to keep them warm.

I've spent a ton of money buying high end gloves to warm my cold hands. Haven't found a pair yet that works. However, I did see some electric gloves the other day that I haven't tried yet.

A hack that I wasn’t shown for cold weather motorcycle rides was to use cotton balls and put some into the tip of each finger. It really seemed to help.

Of course there are heated gloves. Seirus hellfire are their top of the line. They have multiple levels of expense down to about 200 bucks.
Outdoor research heated gloves. Several other brands have heated gloves.

Its another option albeit an expensive option.

Call me crazy I wear loose fleece gloves and if it gets real cold I use Hot Hands hand warmers

Go to a army/ navy surplus store and buy a pair of wool liners. Then slip a pair of deer skin gloves big enough to fit over the liners loosely. I’ve bird hunted in them in temps below zero. When it is warmer, leave the liners in your pocket.

Smokey, sounds like an idea worth trying, except for the part about bird hunting in temps below zero.....
