Big Man Cots - What do you like?

Big Man Cots - What do you like? - 09/30/08 07:16 PM

My boys and I are doing the "rustic camping" thing in a couple of months and I need to get a cot. Been looking at the cabela's Alaskan outfitter xl, supposedly holds 600lbs, but while reading their user comments looks like the big boys are causing the legs to fold up. By most standards I'm bigger than the average bear and need something sturdy, but comfortable. What are ya'll using?

I got mine at Sportsman's Warehouse a few years back. I'm thinking it's an Alpine (I know the brand begins with an "A"). But not positive. It's very comfy, but can't attest to it's overall strength for sure. I'm 6' 3", and weigh 190lbs. So I'm definitely not taxing it in the weight department. I just needed it for the added length. It's like 40"w X 90"l. Plenty big enough.

The New Mexico locals like them a lot. My Uncle had two of them stolen out of his tent last year while up there scouting for our hunt.

I bought one from cabela's last year its the Outfitter XL cot $99.99 I am about 280 and it works well for me. Don't think you will fold the legs on this one, here is the link

Just go to the cabela's web site and look at the cots. I bought mine in Austin last year but the one in Fort Worth has them as well.

I got mine from the Cabelas bargain cave. I believe it is the XXL model. Plenty of width and length (I'm 6'6") but a question for the others who own this one...Does the fabric stay relatively flat when lying down? Mine seems to bow too much.
No fat/big jokes either

I don't know where mine came from, but I have been using it for over 10 years now, I am 5'9" and weigh 250-260, and have had no problem with it.

I use a 4 inch thick foam rubber mattress on it and that provides plenty of insulation under me, and sleep in a Mummy Bag rated down to 0 degrees.

I got one at Academy for $69.00 last year that has been great. I am a big ole boy at 5'10 280 and it holds me fine. The older metal style with a 4" pad mattress.

If your driving a truck, have you thought about getting an air mattress with some kind of foam mat and just putting it in the back of the bed?

That may not be as rustic as you were wanting. But my father has a bad back and knee and that is what he uses. He's able to enjoy our outdoor camping trips better this way.
