Hog lights for a feeder? Any ideas?

Hog lights for a feeder? Any ideas? - 08/08/11 04:42 AM

I was thinking about buying a security light that is powered by a battery and solar panel and mounting it on top of my feeder to illumintate the ground when hogs are eating all my corn. It has a motion detector on it. Meant for security lighting around a home.

1. Will it scare the hogs off?

2. Will the hogs get used to it and still eat the corn?

My goal is to illuminate them enough to lay havoc on them with a Norinco NHM-91 will 100 round drum mag.

Any thoughts?

get the solar lights at Harbor freight, 14.99 for 2 they work really good. Have had them out for 2 months in this heat and havent had any issues. These stay lit all night, and will not scare hogs or anything else. Would also be good for hunting exotics.

Awesome. Have the hogs gotten used to them or does it scare them off?

just edited the post answering that question....it will not effect the hogs in anyway...they are pretty freaking cool, and not expensive...we put them on top of t-post and just wrap electrical tape around them to keep them from getting broke by the pigs. Very nice to be able to night hunt in this heat, and it can even be fun for whacking some raccoons

A few buddies on our lease have tried the small, solar powered landscpe lights on their feeders, but the coons tear them up almost immediately.

I have a set of Texas Boars feederlights that are awesome, but am currently experimenting with this so that I can film my night time hog hunts in color rather than just the red hue of the TB feeder lights. Will let you know how it works out.

B the Buck, thx for the headsup, I'd been eying the $15/pair ones for use on my friend's land, strapped to his trees right over his feeders for the same reason.

i started with the wildgame moonshine lights with red lens. i then switched to green lens because it was kinda hard to see. i then switched to clear lens and never looked back. i also have a elusive wildlife feeder light on one side of my feeder which is green but a lot brighter than the moonshine ones. all my lights are on motion switches.

i think the lights do scare the hogs at first but i add some corn and sweet feed mix under the feeder to help bring them in. we have noticed that the bigger hogs are very nervous and usually stay at the outer edges of the light .

i have heard of people using the security lights you talked about but one that will last is not always cheap.

I got The Kill Light from elusive wildlife technlogies. The green light doesn't seem to scare the hogs. I just put it under the feeder the day before I'm goin to hunt that night. Have shot a couple of hogs this past year. I even had a deer eating under it with some racoons a couple months ago. I looked at designing some sort of solar light rig but this ended up cheaper and easier.

I have had the cheapest landscape lights at Home Depot on mine for 3 years now. I just zip tied and duck taped them to the legs where nothing could reach them. WHen I get to the blind at early morning when it is still dark they are still shining, atleast last season they still were. From my box blind I can see sillouettes at 100 yards well enough to shoot hogs and know that is what I am shooting. I also have a ground blind at 18 yards and I can see them real well to bow hunt. I only used two lights. You can spend $20 and light up your feeder well I believe I paid $3 each after the summer season when they are on clearance.
