Scope Fogging Question?

I bought a Cabela's Slugger EXT scope for my shotgun from Cabela's via internet. It is supposed to be fogproof. It was delivered last Tuesday (10th). I unpacked it and placed it into the freezer for about 10 min. When taken out of the freezer, both the outer lens surfaces fogged as I expected. Also, the inner surfaces of both front and rear lenses fogged up seriously (unexpected). After about 10 min. or 15 min. or so it did clear up. I called Cabela's and they agreed to send a replacement that was delivered today. I again did the same test and again with the same results. However, this one did not stay foggy quite as long on the inner surfaces as did the first one.

My question: is this an unreasonable test? I know it's a $100 scope, but to me fogproof should mean fogproof as concerning the inside surfaces. I am thinking of sending it back for a refund and maybe trying a Redfield or a Vortex. Ya'lls thoughts?

I don't think that is a fair test at all. In the wild you will never go from 20 to 75 instantly. I have some expensive scopes and they will still get like that on an extremely cold day sometimes especially if I get it close to my eye or breath.

On the inside? I well understand and expect it to fog (condensate) on the outside, but the inside is my concern.

It think it is a very fair test. Fogproof means fogproof. How many times do you get out of your cabin, rv, etc that has a internal temp of 60-80 degrees, then immidately walk outside with your rifle/scope and it is 30 degrees or less outside. The answer is always, unless your in a sleeping bag out side and like to freeze your butt off with your rifle by your side. If it fogs in the inside, definately send it back and get a different brand of scope.

Something is wrong there. I would get a refund on the scope and go with a Vortex or Redfield like you said.

The Vortex would be my choice, not that there is anything wrong with Redfields. The 2-7x32 Vortex Vipers are on sale for around $170 right now, can't beat that deal.

I had a Nikon Buckmasters once that was bad about fogging. I have had good luck with Burris and Leupold though.

I sent both of the scopes back to Cabela's. They did not argue with me in the least about it, so I am still impressed with their service, but not so much their branded scopes. Fogproof does mean fogproof and these were not and they certainly were not going to get better over time. I then ordered a Bushnell Elite 3200 3-9x40 with Firefly reticle and RainGuard lens coating from Natchez Shooters Supply on sale for $162.85. This was only about $13.00 more than the Redfield. If I had known about this deal first I would not have bothered with the Cabela's brand stuff. A lot more bang for the buck.

I understsand and agree with your frustration and would have returned them as well, and although the scope should preform the way it is advertised, you have to remember one thing, its a $100 scope...

Doesn`t seem unreasonable to me either.....the freezer test is what I do with all my new scope purchases too. All 5 of my Leupolds never fogged on the inside. Fast an easy way to tell the quality of the scope when it comes to fogging on the inside.

Sounds like you got a good deal on the Bushnell too.
