What camo pattern to buy??

What camo pattern to buy?? - 07/13/10 01:48 AM

I just hopped on a ranch in San Saba, Texas and Im trying to find a camo pattern that will match the terrain that I'll be hunting in. Its about time for me to retire my old, worn out hunting clothes and get some new gear so I want to make sure I get a pattern that will help me fade into the brush. Ive tried looking for a pattern that matches but so far I cant seem to find anything that looks similar.

For those who aren't familiar with the San Saba terrain, it is pretty dense country with mainly pecan and mesquite trees and prickly pear cactus.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I'm a big fan of Natural Gear. It doesn't look like anything in particular and probably isn't the "coolest" thing to wear but it "fades" into alot of different scenarios / terrain.

Mossy Oak "Brush", it should work really well in that area.

Tiger Stripe,,, Just kidding. You should be able to wear just about anything.

I've found that a green shirt, brown pants, and gray cap is about right. For variety, you could wear a green hat, brown shirt, and gray pants.

Game Guard Camo

I like Real Tree...then again I hunt in a blind so I wear whatever is on my back.

Great info guys, thanks alot!

I will be in a blind most of the time, and for that I will more than likely wear a good pair of carhartt coveralls but on certain occasions, especially during turkey season, I will be on the ground and for that I'll use a good pattern so I can blend into my surroundings. It seems like I dont have to be to picky because most people agree that almost anything will work down there.

Re: What camo pattern to buy?? - 07/15/10 03:07 AM

camo really isnt necessary... just some earthtone clothes do fine. camo is a modern invention thats only been around for maybe 50 years or so. People have been hunting for thousands of years without it...and with nothing more than primitive weapons. I have found that as long as you sit still and break up your outline...it doesnt matter what your wearing. Ive taken deer, hogs, and migratory birds just wearing khaki colored pants and a tan/brown/olive shirt.

Thats my opinion though.

I think all these camo patterns are like a lot of fishing lures. They catch more fisherman than fish. For hunting anything neutral colored and anything to break up your pattern works. Movement is what they spot. The other night I was reading a novel on the front porch. A little 4" lizard moved in the hedges and I saw it out of the corner of my eye while my eyes were on the page. It was perfectly camoflaged until it moved.Again this is my personal opinion. As often as not I wear brown pants and any ole camo patterned shirt or jacket.

I'm always careful what SOLID color I wear... for example the Carharts... the brown or gray ones could easily be mistaken for a deer by someone else. I try real hard not to look like a deer during deer season and no red during turkey season.

Re: What camo pattern to buy?? - 07/15/10 09:49 PM

you know, there is just something wrong with a hunter who would shoot a person by mistake thinking they are a deer. That means they are doing several things wrong....1 not making sure of their target before they pull the trigger..There should be absolutely no doubt as to what your shooting before you pull that trigger...and 2 Probably shooting at too far of a distance or into thick brush and cant fully identify their target...3 just plain flat out no common since. Its just sad to me that we as hunters have to worry about getting shot. There should be no need for hunters orange. Everyone should have no doubt as to what they are shooting at. If you arent 120 percent sure...dont pull the trigger. Thats my rant as im sure it applies to none of you on here. Right? wink

Im with you rick o'shay...i dont want to get shot by some idiot either.

perfect example of not needing camo is the hunters orange though. i have had a deer walk very close to me while wearing hunters orange and never see me. i hate wearing the stuff, but It just goes to show how pointless camo really is. Now i have heard that deer can see shades of blue, but ive never tested it, so i would steer away from jeans and go for neutral tones instead.

Amazing how much money people spend on camo though. I do have one set of very inexpensive cammo that I use ocassionally, but Ill save my money for gas and ammo to go hunt. Your chances of killing a deer are higher if you go 3 times without cammo than one time with it....and about the same if you go 3 times with it, vs 3 times without it. Just sit still and crawl up under some brush to break up your outline.

well actually anything realtree makes is a good match for that area

Agree with Realtree AP.

I'm actually considering getting an ASAT cover suit, which is supposed to be the best out there. Doesn't look good to the naked eye, but when you look at it in black/white it's incredible! Plus, you can wear shorts under it if it's hot and still be hidden.

Red and black or green and black checkered shirt and coat with earth tone pant in green, gray, tan ect for most game animals. Now if your hunting turkey that is another story. You want something that blends into your chosen hunting environment and give as much 3D effect as you can get. Just my opinion.

Any pattern will work. I strive to stay in the shadows any time I'm hunting. That, and keeping the wind in my face are the two most important things I can do in the field. And if I do that correctly, I could hunt in my BVD's. As tro what camo i wear? I like Mossy Oak Break-up. That pattern seems to be the best comprimise to me. I have used it everywhere from the hill country, to east tx, to the rockies.

I still like Brush Country best. They've got some great clothing but it's hard to find. Buc-ees in Luling or Wharton has a good selection.

Realtree AP or Mossy Oak Brush would work well in many areas.

The ASAT is awesome, and it's what I wear. With the 3-D suit I wore athletic shorts and a white t-shirt under it. In the winter, I can layer under it and wear it over and not have to spend extra money on warm camo clothes.

Re: What camo pattern to buy?? - 07/06/11 05:00 AM

Any fresh opinions on this topic? I'm curious about this myself as a new transplant. I'm somewhat intrigued by the brushcountry and gameguard patterns, but have always fared well with APG (AP Green) on prior Texas hunts. I, for one, would like to hear more about the Texas specialty patterns.

Re: What camo pattern to buy?? - 07/07/11 04:57 PM

I would wait to buy the camo. First go to San Saba and scout the territory you will be hunting in, take some pictures, then make your decision based on what you think will blend you in best. Second... are you turkey hunting? If you are hunting turkey you really do need to buy some good camo, if your only hunting whitetail then get something that will break up your outline. Remember SCENT CONTROL.

I use Realtree AP up here for my hat, shirt, gloves and mask, but have started wearing multicam pants. I've had no real issues.

But this also the first time in 20+ years I'm going up a tree to bow hunt white tails too. I'm just washing everything in Scent-a-Way and wearing some Scent-a-Way Tek4 lightweight base 1 under it for scent control.
