500 S&W- Reduced recoil loads??

500 S&W- Reduced recoil loads?? - 03/08/24 08:15 PM

Does anyone run any reduced recoil loads for a 500 S&W? I know Trail Boss would be ideal, but any other powders? Don't say TiteGroup, as that one is a no-no from several shooters.

5744 could be your ticket. It can work well in bottle neck cartridges and straight walled cases. i have used it in reduced loads for a few bottle necked cartridges and in some 45-70 loads.

Mostly what i load for these days with it are in the 357 Max full power loads for the Ruger stretch Blackhawk. I have pretty much duplicated 44spcl loads in 44 mag with it come to think of it.

I actually use Tite Group and wouldn't be caught dead with Trail Boss in my locker. I have used 5744 for 7.62X39 and cast bullets. It's intriguing why someone wants a reduced .500 load.

Why no trail boss?

Because it's fluffy and light, costs a lot more than anything else for pistol,, and it's for mouse fart loads I have no use for. Standard load levels in .45 Colt are the mildest I've loaded and I didn't have to resort to the Trail Boss gimmick to get there. I got rid of most of my .38 Special stuff when my .38-only revolver disappeared and I never have owned a .429 magnum nor would ever own a .429 Special. If I want no recoil I shoot rimfire. To each his own.

Might try to duplicate Buffalo Bore's 500 jrh load. 440 grain bullet at 950fps. The jrh brass should work in the 500 s&w. I've used blue dot in my jrh loads also. You can trim some 500 s&w brass to jrh length. Look on single action forum also for load data on the jrh and 500 s&w.

I have not tried any reduced loads. I would start with Unique or 2400 if I were going to try loading down. Lyman #4 manual has some data for both.

I have no idea what the availability might be, but have you looked at VV Tin Star? It might do what you want---if you can get it.

Between 1350fps and 2100fps there is no increase in penetration. If you want to better killing/penetrating load then you go up on the bullet weight. Simply trying to make something go faster for the sake of going faster If you're hunting with it is pointless. I have done a bunch of handgun hunting and have never felt that my 357mag, 41mag, 44spl, 44mag, or 45 Colt loads were lacking and never even considered a 500. I do have a few handguns chambered in 454 casull but I don't recall having ever hunted with them.

I didn't say speed up. I said I have no reason to slow down.
