Reloading start up

Hi guys, I have an old herters super model 3 press. I'm wanting to reload 9mm, for my pistol. What dies do I need. I have everything for reloading (this all was my fathers) he used to reload 308, 223. I know a little but need some help. Anything else I need? Thanks for any help.

as far as dies just get a set of hornady, ribs, dies

should come with resize/deprimer, expander and seater

Most any Manuel will walk you through the process step by step.

You will need a tumbler to clean your brass, and a scale to measure powder charges.

As for dies, Hornady, RCBS, Dillon

He will cut your grass too.

What is "everything for reloading"? What do you have?

Agree on a couple of manuals. If I only got one, it would probably be the Lyman. Get someone to walk you through the steps.

Some of those old presses won't accept common loading dies. Before buying dies, I'd verify that standard dies will work with it.

Shell holders were sometimes a bit different also, might need an adapter to use normal shell holder.

I had and wish I still had a Herter's web C frame press. Used standard thread for mounting dies but only used their shell holders. Bought an adapter so could use RCBS holders.

Basic needs have been covered.

Manual - I like using an actual book so can mark pages etc. they have great info and pics of how to in the first section. DO NOT skip over this. I use 2-3 to cross check info.

Internet. I also look at web sites like Hodgdon. Or others by reputable commercial companies. Don't go near a YouTube how to by some goof ball drinking or smokin who knows what. I don't post powder loads I use. nor do I pay any attention to those found there without checking 2-3 of those manuals.

Equipment.

Press dies shell holders. Often a shell holder will work for multiple calibers like 45ACP, .243, .308, .30-06 and more.

Primer Seating tool. Some presses come w this. I use a separate seating tool.

Scale. I still use a balance beam others like digital but you need one and be sure it is calibrated. Along with a scale I use a trickle charger. You can splurge later on a digital combo of scale trickle charger.

Others. Loading block, funnel, calipers, case cleaning, primer pocket cleaning, case lube (buy carbide dies for pistol calibers to avoid lube step).

Don't rush when buying stuff. Find someone w experience and see what they use ask why. Saves $ for components.

Don't rush when loading. And no distractions - football game on TV, phone, visitors, none. You are messing with a lot of pressure and using the wrong data or powder can cause a catastrophic failure, injury or worse.
It's a great hobby and safe when you follow the rules.

If you come across a good buy on a used bullet puller go ahead and buy it. Chances are you will have use for it sooner or later. Maybe you will never make a mistake, but you might want to salvage some bullets or brass.
