Ruger American in 308 - 09/18/14 01:21 PM

My new Ruger American in 308 cal just came in and now it is time to get some hunting rounds for it. Anybody have any experience with whast will hold the tightest pattern and shoots well out of this rifle. Thanks for any tips and advice in advance.

Every rifle is different so you'll have to just find what yours likes. That being said, 308 is pretty easy to load for with a variety of powders and bullets. NBTs and SGKs seem to always just shoot well out of my rifles and are excellent on deer sized game. For powders, Varget is popular but some reloaders have issues with lot to lot variations in that powder. IMR 4064, W760, Reloder (15-19 depending on bullet weight) are all candidates as well. If it were me working up a hunting load I'd pop open the Nosler manual for the bullet weight you want and start with the recipe labeled "Most Accurate Powder Tested". Sierra labels their load recipes as "Accuracy Load" and "Hunting Load" so you could start there as well.

I found some Varget the other day and its been a long while since I've been able to find any. I hear that IMR4320 is a good substitute and readily available.
