Newbie with a few questions?

Newbie with a few questions? - 04/25/14 04:18 AM

Bought my first press today and had a few basic questions.

Does anyone here load 100gr .380 bullets in to a
9mm case?

What is the difference between the two bullet seat style for pistol , the crimp and taper dies ? And which is better for semi auto pistols?

Last where is a good place to get bullets and powder around Killeen/ Temple area?

Thanks

The 380 Auto and the 9mm shoot the same diameter bullet, which is .355". So, any of the bullets that will work in the 380 Auto will work in the 9mm. Technically, it's not a .380 bullet. When crimping, you will want to run a taper crimp for a semi auto. Supplies, I'd look on line or your local reloading/shooting dealers.

It is a smaller than normal weight bullet for 9mm. You may have to run it pretty fast to get the gun to cycle reliably.

So Chad let me get this straight... I should be good running 380 brass through my 9mm dies?

The way I read it, he said that any bullet that will work in 9mm will also work in a 380. Cases are still different.

380 in Kraut Speak is 9mm kurz...or 9mm short...both same diameter bullets but NOT interchangeable cases.

No it would do you no good to run .380 cases thru your 9mm dies. Different case, different diameter! That's why they make .380 & 9mm dies.

1. Does anyone here load 100gr .380 bullets in to a

Yes, there is load data out there for this load, but I don't have it. Try the Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook.

2. What is the difference between the two bullet seat style for pistol , the crimp and taper dies ? And which is better for semi auto pistols?
As a general rule, with a revolver you use a roll crimp. With a semi-auto you use a taper crimp as most semi-autos headspace on the case mouth and a roll crimp would let the case move too far forward.

3. Last where is a good place to get bullets and powder around Killeen/ Temple area?
With the current scarcity, any place that you can find them is good. Start calling/visiting the LGS and asking anyone that reloads.

Ok thanks guys. After reading response Reloader-7 I went back and read chad's response I see where he was talking about the bullet and not the die. Thanks for making that clear to me.

Correct. You will need 380 dies for 380, and 9mm dies for 9mm. They both shoot the same diameter .355" bullet. But the cases are different sizes. The 380 case is .373" and the 9mm is .380". The dies are not interchangeable.
