HELP! Reloading for .300 win mag - 10/19/13 10:58 PM

I just started reloading my weatherby vanguard .300 win mag for an upcoming mule deer hunt. I am using Winchester brass, win primers, RL-22 powder and 180 Barnes TSX bullets. I have tried a bunch of different powder charges and have yet to get one that groups. Has anyone had a similar experience? Should I try a different bullet? Recommendations please?
Thanks

That is what I would try that first.

Mine likes 75.5gr of RL-22 with 180s. I like them seated long as possible.

Several of my 300WMgs have liked the Sierra accuracy book load using IMR 4831 of 71.6 grs & 180gr SGK's. I was using RP brass and Remmy Mg primers @ 3000 fps and got sub moa bug hole groups out of the last M70 CRF Classic SS/syn...still dunno why I sold it...oh yeah I wound up with a SAKO M85 Hunter Grade 260 in the deal & replaced the Big Winnie with a 'lil Winnie 300 WSM.

Try 165 or 168 tsx or ttsx with 78gr RL22

Either try different bullets, or make sure your barrel is nice and clean. Solids can be finicky

I have cleaned barrel really good. What length are you recommending 30378? Mine are 3.340. Are you going longer than that?

Try some Berger 190's over 70.5 RL22. I have gotten sub MOA out of about 6 different 300WM's with that. With my new 300WM I have been trying the Barnes TTSX 180's over the 70.5 load and it shoots really well. I have to seat em in more than I like because the mag box in my Winchester is kinda short. I shot 2 5 shot groups with the load the other day and came in at 3/4" average. Its a custom gun though

Win 70 Classic action,
Benchmark 29" total length barrel with MB.
Bedded in Boyds Classic

Has shot sub MOA in:
Kimber 8400 Advanced Tactical
GA Precision 300WM
Rem 700 Sendero
Rem 700 ADL Bedded in boyds classic
Win 70 custom with Shilen barrel

Also, do you have a decent scope? Hows the mounting system (IE Leup Standard bases/rings minimum). Are you a decent shot with other rifles? I.E. some people step right up to a light 300WM and develop bad shooting habbits because the recoil messes with their mind.

Also what are you shooting off of?

Re: HELP! Reloading for .300 win mag - 10/20/13 12:58 PM

I just put a new Nikon Monarch 3. 5-20 on it. I'm shooting off sand bags and a shooting bench. Same as I shoot my other rifles. And yes I have my 25-06 shooting 1 hole groups from the same set up. I misspoke in my original post. I am shooting the Barnes ttsx. And the scope is on leupold rings and bases. It's shooting about 2" groups now. But I'm looking for better than than.
Thanks for your help

Yes! 3.34 is the SAAMI spec. Each rifle will have its own chamber dimensions. I have seen some 300 Win mag chambers go over 3.5". Find what your rifle likes.

Like has been said. Try some Nosler 168 Bal. Tips with Rl-22, 75 grains for a accurate mild recoil load or up it to 78 grains for something a little stouter. Either one will take down the biggest whitetail ever walked the face of the earth. Fed. Mag primers work best also.

IMO, you don't need a 180 for mule deer. For my factory Rem 700, I load a 165 gr. Nosler Accubond over 78.5 gr. RL22, OAL 3.585" (my rifle has a very long leade) to get 3170 FPS and consistent sub-1" groups.

Ok. Is there one bullet that seems to shoot better? Gonna try some new ones this weekend and play with the OAL. Thanks everyone for your help

Re: HELP! Reloading for .300 win mag - 10/20/13 08:44 PM

I sure like the 165 Accubond.

Every rifle is different... every rifle is going to like particular bullets better than others. Crazy but true.

Re: HELP! Reloading for .300 win mag - 10/20/13 09:41 PM

Clean the barrel perfectly and then shoot some groups with a known good bullet, like a Sierra target bullet. I have one .300 magnum rifle that flat will not shoot any bullet over 165 grains accurately, and monometal bullets had better be no more than 150 grains. The trick is only changing one component at a time. To be honest, I'd have started with H/IMR 4831 as my baseline powder. If your rifle will not shoot two bullet weights of Sierra target bullets accurately with one of the 4831 powders, and you're sure it's not a scope/mount issue, then I'd take a very serious look at having your stock glass bedded.

Ok. Y'all have been super helpful. Think ill try the accubonds this weekend. The reason I started with RL-22 is best reviews I've seen and only one I could find..

Re: HELP! Reloading for .300 win mag - 10/21/13 04:46 PM

Keep at it. Just need to try more combos. RL-22 should work well, but it might not like that bullet combo. No telling. I'd try H-4831SC, and also IMR-7828. Some of my best loads in the 300WM have been with 7828. The last couple of loads I worked up, 180 gr. Barnes Tipped TSX and 180 gr. Accubonds, both with 7828 shot well under an inch. Obviously results vary but the potential is there.

Re: HELP! Reloading for .300 win mag - 10/22/13 03:52 AM

My TC Encore really didn't like MRP or RL22, same stuff, tried magnum, 7828, and magpro. I got my best results with magpro with a 165 gr speer bt. The magpro might be a little temp sensitive down there in texas though. I was trying both the 165 and 180 gr speer bt's. I got my best relults for a non misfiring lower end load with 4007 ssc for critters that could be under the 150 yd range without being to much gun. But, all guns will shoot different bullets and powders differently so I suppose you are going to get in some trigger time finding a load that you like.

Never been able to get Barnes to shoot out of any of my rifles accurately...funny how things work.

The selection is limited, but I just picked up some 165 gr. Sierra game kings.. Will see how these do this weekend.. Thanks for everyone's help.

Re: HELP! Reloading for .300 win mag - 10/23/13 11:15 AM

Sierras generally shoot very well, and if you can't get accuracy from them, I'd start looking at the rifle and scope. Make sure the barrel is free floating. All screws--action and scope bases--are tight? Make sure the magazine box isn't binding and putting pressure on the receiver.

Before you give up on the Barnes bullets, Barnes recommends that their bullets be seated well off the lands, unlike most other brands. Try pushing the bullets further into the cases so they're .05" off the lands.

Funny, but I'm loading and shooting some Nosler 200 gr Partitions in my .300 Winny today, also with Re-22. Leaving for Nevada elk next Tuesday. Hoping for a 350-class bull....

A little editing on my above post.
"I got my best relults for a non misfiring lower end load with 4007 ssc for critters that could be under the 150 yd range without being to much gun."
I got my best results for a non hangfires on the lower end loads with 4007 ssc for critters that could be under the 150 yd range without being to much gun.

My old 300 WM loved 165 grn Accubonds and 69 grns of IMR-4350.Or 75 grns of R-22.I used cci mag primmers.

Re: HELP! Reloading for .300 win mag - 11/04/13 09:39 PM

You didn't say what make of rifle/twist rate ect. I used IMR 4350 72.1 grains on standard projectiles. Velocity was 3173 FPS 26 in bbl. it grouped 1/2 in on 1 in 10 twist rate bolt action and on Browning BAR. If RL 22 is what Barnes manual recs. I'd use that. Make sure you bbl is very clean. Only rifle I have that shoots all of them same point of impact and groups factory and hand loads really well is a SAKO TRG .308. Barnes sometimes take a little fine tuning but are worth the effort.

The 180 tsx is too long for that factory twist.. diff bullet configuration/brand or drop dwn in weight.

My load is 77 grains H1000 with 208 amax at 3.395" OAL. Shoots in the .3's at 2895 FPS. Shilen 10 twist barrel at 26"

Re: HELP! Reloading for .300 win mag - 11/13/13 04:01 AM

H1000 works well in my rifle with 180 partitions. Maz book load shoots in the 3/4" range. P-14 Enfield rechambered.

Re: HELP! Reloading for .300 win mag - 11/13/13 11:00 AM

I loaded 72.1 grains of IMR 4350 w/ a mag fed primer and 180 projectile for yrs. I use H 1000 in my Weatherby same results. 1000 load for win was 69 grain same 4350. Not hard to load for usually if you fit projectile to your chamber.
