Noob Reloader Lesson 300 AAC Load - 09/04/13 09:27 PM

http://youtu.be/3rrZ-yW0alI

I had 3 boxes of 220gr. Remington Ammo that performed subpar for my liking. I decided to pull the 220gr. bullet and replace it with a 130gr. Barnes TTSX. I used the same case, primer and up'ed the powder by 2gr. Since I was using a much lighter bullet subsonic was not a goal of mine but a good hog killing bullet.

I was able to purchase some powder and primers at Cabela's two weeks ago and built some bullets from scratch using a heavier powder charge.

It never occurred to me that their was a "minimal fps" for the Barnes TTSX to expand. Research states that you need a minimal of 1600-200 fps for the bullet to expand properly. I am excited about this bullet and hopes that it will deliver some dead hogs and varmints in the future.

Why would you want to add your powder on top of an unknown powder and seat a new bullet on top of this? And still shoot it??!! Not a good move at all.

Just dump the factory powder (or use it as lawn fertilizer), and use your powder only.

On the Barnes, this is why they have the 110 grain TAC TSX (black tipped) bullet specific to the black out. The tip is massive, and has a much larger HP behind the tip to help it expand at the lower velicities of the black out.

This is why I will never shoot anyone else's reloads.

No, no, no. Didn't mix powder. Just added .2 gr more of whatever Remi was using.

I'd love some 110 but can't... ...well you know the ammo situation. Cabelas had 5 boxes of the 130 TTSX so I just went for it.

how do you know exactly what Remington uses?
manufacturers often use proprietary blends not available commercially to hobbyist loaders...

I think he sacrificed one round's powder or the others. However not know the mins and maxes you could have invited trouble

Realize that a subsonic 300 is a hot 45 round.

Measured 20 loads. Which by the way was not very consistent but right at 9.9 gr. looking in different load books that use that charge weight for the 220 gr bullet and deduct what powder they're using. Then use minimal weight and work new load up. Only problem with minimal. Won't open Barnes TTSX up!

Bad idea.

How do you know what powder Remington factory ammo is running? You don't know. Was it .2 or 2 grains? How can you feel comfortable actually shooting this!!? The black out is not a very complex round. But doing what you are doing with the powders is a huge no-no in making your own ammo. I think your title says it all- Noob reloader Lesson.

Kids- don't try this at home!

You have no way of knowing if that is a min. Max. Or a middle of the road load. You have no way of finding what powder Remington used. With that lite of a powder charge it sounds like a pistol powder anyways. They are very fast burning.Your asking for problems.

I had the same problems as you with some of my reloads not expanding, turns out it was the cigarette ash that kept falling in the case

I am a new rifle reloader and as other said would not advocate doing what you did. I am glad that nothing major happened

To the problem at hand... I though I had seen a load for the 135 somewhere. Start reading the reputable books with load data to see if someone had published something. I know there are loads floating around on the net. But I would trust the manufacturers more

I only have that problem when I eyeball the powder charge when I am in a hurry, I mean it is not like you really need to weigh it. Just fill up the case and some powder out then seat the old pill on top.
