I have cancer

Posted By: Fatalwishes' Wife

I have cancer - 04/17/13 07:04 AM

Since I spend most my time here I posted this here. This is my favorite section.

I'm laying here in Harris Downtown in pain trying to catch my breath.

I have a 17 cm (yeah its big) mass in my belly. I'm told its Lymphoma type B ...that is the kind of cancer you want.

I'd like to be more active here I just don't have the energy. I can still read though and I thought a few of you would want to know.

The ones that work where I used to...Kay already knows.

Chad, maybe some day we can join forces I've just been too ill to deal with it. I still want to shoot 1000 yards with you.

I'm told what I have is curable so I know I can continue my 5.56 thread and have some more AR fun and live a long life.

I love reading ya'ls posts in here and learning daily. The experience in here is overwhelming and I love it. Keeps my mind off of things and it helps get my mind out of here.

I wanted to thank everybody in here for information past present and future and Ill be reading daily.

I have not been posting a lot lately and now you know why.

Re: I have cancer - 04/17/13 01:39 PM

Good luck with it. I had a tumor back around 1980. Took two surgeries in my head to get it, but I was back in working order pretty quickly (well..not that darn quickly). I found, as you probably will, that surviving something that you thought might 'get' you, makes the air smell sweeter and a blue sky bluer. Sounds crazy to say it, but I think it made me a better person. That's kind of a hard way to get an attitude adjustment though. I can actually laugh about it now. You'll get past this, and the coyotes that get to live while you are out of service will breed to give you more targets. There's a positive.

Re: I have cancer - 04/18/13 01:42 PM

Thanks everybody. I had my first real round of chemo starting about midnight.

I was scared. I have stage 4 so they are treating it aggressively.

The code word they used is RCHOP.

R-CHOP
Rituximab (Rituxan) 375 mg/m2 iv d1
Cyclophophamide (Cytoxan) 750 mg/m2 iv d1
Doxorubicin (Adriamycin) 50 mg/m2 iv d1
Vincristine 1.4 mg/m2 ( max 2 mg ) iv d1
Prednisone 100 mg po qd d1-5
Q3w x 6-8 cycles

Approved by FDA on 2/10/2006

That is the least aggressive you can do outside the hospital. I am praying it works because otherwise I have to be admitted back to the hospital a week at a time for something called EPOCH.

That is a really aggressive form of treatment and I just don't want to be in the hospital sick every other week.

So RCHOP is going to work with ya'lls prayers and a little luck.

TY dear.

I may get to go home tomorrow. It will be three weeks before my next treatment then two weeks to see on a CT-Scan if the mass has shrunk

During that 5 weeks I'm going to try juicing and other "home" remedies. Anything that could help shrink it so I stay out of the hospital.

I'm missing the smell of gun powder....My Dillon 650, and shooting in general.

I hope my energy comes back soon.

It's a lot to take in isn't it.

Re: I have cancer - 04/19/13 11:44 AM

Thanks everybody.

Hopefully I get to go home today. A friend brought me a "myfi" ATT hotspot so I can get some real internet so that is helping me communicate.

After my first round of Chemo they are waiting for something called "Tumor Lysis Syndrome"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tumor_lysis_syndrome

sounds serious so my blood labs will show what is going on. If I'm ok I get to go home today, otherwise I'm stuck here for a while.

They gave me a Neulasta shot to boost my white blood cells and it's supposed to give me flu like symptoms.

I just want to go home. I'm tired of being poked and prodded.

Thank you all for your prayers. It means so much too me.

I know several of us have had various "issues" over the years and learned the value of the banter and BS we have to offer. I've "used" both the THF & TFF as a needed diversion during my times of pain and uncertainty and have been blessed with the Knowledge of a Greater Power that you and I are not ever alone ... despite not ever darkening the door of a church for most of my life.

2 of my 3 BFF's have had the Big C with some times years of procedures and made it thru the dark days and you will too.

...LOL and here I thought I was the only person to miss the smell of burnt gun powders or Hoppes #9 in my dreams...

Re: I have cancer - 05/02/13 06:31 AM

This [censored] sucks.

I got my final Pathology and Pet Scan results...

It's bad. The PET scan showed more than just the big tumor, it's everywhere in my abdomen...mesenteric lymphnodes,...several loops of the small intestine ....pancreas,..

It's also the most aggressive called Burkitt's

It's still curable but the RCHOP Chemo is out. I have to take the most aggressive dose they have and it has to be done in the hospital.

So starting May 6 I go back to Harris Hospital for Chemo for a week a time

It's a new Treatment developed at MD Anderson called Hyper CVAD.

I just want to curse and say "this sucks" and throw a pity party but it won't do any good.

I'm still curable it's just gonna suck.

I have to do 8 treatments.

They are talking about bone marrow transfusions and blood transfusions and I'm like this is just insane.

I would rather not do a bone marrow transfusion if I don't have to but it's on the table and we have to consult with a specialist.

This sucks. It's all I can say.

Please pm me your addy. I'm going to send you a freshly shot cartridge.

The smell of gunpowder stays with it for quite awhile. Each time you go in for treatment, drop that cartridge in your pocket.

And when you need a "little pick me up" just hold that cartridge under your nose for a whiff of powder.

We've got your back.

Re: I have cancer - 05/03/13 05:05 PM

Chad called and really lifted my spirits with talk of future trigger time. 1000 yard shooting....now that's something to live for.

He was telling me about these little round rubber balls you can load in a .38 and shoot em with primers...

I found these...

http://www.midwayusa.com/product/713633/...meter-box-of-50

but those are not the round balls that are reusable. They would work though....anybody know where to get the round balls?

Least I can do is get my SW 586 out and shoot some pics of this fkn tumor and kick its butt realmad .

Wow that is tempting. When I feel good, I'm always in a hog or dove killing mood. I really appreciate it. I'm gonna beat this crap, they said I'm curable, so I'm trying to stay positive. Chemo sucks but there are plenty ahead of me that survived it.

Yes that is my blog. I'm still here....I read more than I post lately. Too tired.

That last dose of Chemo with the Methotrexate and Cytarabine.....holy moly. That knocked me on my butt in ways I didn't think was possible. There were times I was afraid to move....I was so damn sick. Now I just sleep 12 hours a day.

I go back in this coming Tuesday for another round of Chemo. This is different stuff and not as harsh ...although it has a huge bag of Red Devil Doxorubicin (Adriamycin)...I'll be on my butt for a few days...then when my white blood cells go to zero I'll be quarantined for a few days....if I get sick..then back into the hospital for antibiotics.

That's what happened last week...

After this dose I have 5 more. I can't wait until this is over.

I'm on #3. Does your wife have breast cancer? Prayers to her.

I appreciate all the prayers and hope.

Cancer sucks. I found out I'm a 1% rarity. Having Burkitt's lymphoma is pretty rare. It's still curable just not the same hope as regular lymphoma. It's one aggressive S.O.B. Still have a 73% chance of remission....

It's above 50 so I guess I'm good. Still waiting to hear about surgery or not....radiation or not....bone marrow ...

I can't wait till this crap is over.

Re: I have cancer - 06/25/13 06:34 PM

Prayers and best wishes to you. My wife was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer 3 years ago, but after surgery and 3 years of chemo, she finally got the word last month that they are stopping the chemo, at least for now. Colon cancer has a nasty habit of recurring, so she has to have a CAT scan every three months, but for now, she's in the clear. After almost 2 years of treatment, when the doctor was able to tell us that there was no sign of cancer, he finally told us that the cancer was so far advanced by the time that he found it, if she hadn't been treated, she would have been dead within 6 months.
The chemo has been rough on her, but the light at the end of the tunnel is indeed bright. We are finally able to make some plans for trips, vacations, and the cruise we've always wanted to go on.
Keep up your spirits, and remember there are a lot of folks here (and other places)pulling for you even though we've never met.

O.k. so some good news.

Got my CT scan today and they smoked that tumor's a$$.

Final CT report shows it went from the original size of 22cm x 14 cm x 13cm down to 9cm x 9cm x 11cm

So its more than 1/2. Hell yeah. It's causing a lot of pain issues but at least the f'n thing is dying.

Re: I have cancer - 07/11/13 02:02 AM

well today I have cancer. It really feels like it.

I've had to get a unit of blood...I've thrown up twice...

I'm tired after staying up 2 nites in a row....

1600 mg of Methatrexate will do that to u in conjunction with cytarbine

I feel like [censored]. Literally. Maybe because the tumor is smaller and they have not lowered the chemo dose and it's attacking other things.

I still have to do 8 rounds of interthecal...

They are going to drill a hole in my skull to put in a Ommaya port.

That is going to suck.

Re: I have cancer - 07/12/13 04:56 AM

Oh this thread touches me big time. My father is currently fighting it. We found out late last year he had stage 4 in his nose and it had attached itself to the bone in his nose as well. The start was not good. I guess no news is good news after they say it is stage 4. He went through his surgery well but the outlook was not promising, but they said they were going to treat it with radiation every day for 35 days, then chemo following that for 40 wks.
The radiation made him weak towards the end but he took that well. The chemo was a different story. He lost 34lbs the first week and then about 50 all together the two wks following. He was hospitalized for 8 of the first 14 days. For such a strong man he was melting away. All we could do is pray it would get better, along with so many prayers from friends and family.
To make a long story short, today he has gone through about 7 wks of chemo. They now say there is no sign of the tumor and the following 33 treatments will be more for preventative. This roller coaster of a ride has pulled us from the lowest of lows, to the outlook being better than anyone could expect. Other than god answering our prayers, I can only say that what has helped us the most is not giving up. No matter how hard it gets, or how sick it makes you, NEVER give up.
By reading the posts you can tell that the world is on your side. Keep your chin up and know that you can beat this and any other problems that may come your way. Prayers to you and your family...

Thanks. I'm too at that point where throwing up is now the normal. They just pour so much chemo in you ....eating is a chore and throwing up is a daily activity. I keep a double bagged trashcan next to the bed and it's now a daily routine.

All my hair is gone, eyebrows, eyelashes are coming out...yup I look like I have cancer now. One thing I have learned about Oncologists. They take a person and strip them down and rebuild them back up. Just about the time you can't look or feel any worse they bring you back and hopefully cancer free. It sounds mid evil but it seems to work.

I hope and pray every day I'm going to pull out but when you are sick and weak and throwing up at 4:55 am in the morning it just is hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. Plus all the side effects .....Pink Eye, no flavor, strips of meat hanging off the inside of your mouth, weakness, no sleep, fear, dry skin, sensitive skin....i feel like a vampire in the sun....night sweats....

I can't wait until I can get a couple of magnums and a picture of cancer and just start blowing the [censored] out of it. I want to win.

Re: I have cancer - 07/13/13 12:07 AM

Fatalwishes, from someone that has only seen all you speak of, and have never felt it, it must be hard to listen to someone say that they feel your pain. It is hard from both ends. All you speak of has been lived through by us so believe me it will get better. Just keep your faith and stay strong minded.
This is not funny, but it is, my father cut all his hair off after his second treatment because he said he would get rid of it before it all fell out, so I did the same. Then two days after he cut his hair to about a quarter inch all over it all fell out in plugs. He has now shaved it slick. He barely beat the chemo to it. I have not yet shaved mine, but will be. I will not have any hair as long as he doesn't. Bad thing about it is I have a really big head.
I hear you on blowing the crap out of the pic. As soon as we are through with our treatments I plan on taking my dad on a trophy hunt somewhere, or a big fishing trip which he loves just as much. It will be like a victory party. Ill tell you what, keep my information and we will see about taking a hunt when you beat yours as well.

Re: I have cancer - 10/21/13 12:17 AM

Jeff, we don't know each other and our situations are not remotely similar -- but if you will allow me, I'd like to give you some words.

Before doing so, I'll try and gain a little credibility in the conversation.

In Jan/Feb of '04traveled to the funeral of my best friend from the Corps, he died of pancreatic cancer. The Marines took care of him the best they could, but the man I knew as a solid rock succumbed to the disease and died looking like nothing but a shell of what I knew him as.

In Feb of '04 I was diagnosed with testicular cancer. My oncologist was straight forward and said I had 3 months to live. No possibilities of any other option. But he did say that if there was a miracle to be found, it would be at MD Anderson. So pressured by my wife (I basically accepted the diagnosis and wanted to go to Disney World -- she was a PITA and demanded I go to Houston). Long story short, my oncologist was wrong, I lived (live), and things worked out. Oh, and while in treatment I found I could eat as many jelly donuts as I wanted, since I would puke everything up anyway. Yippee.

While undergoing this whole thing, I initially had a moment of self-pity and resignation. But that was idiocy and I moved on beyond that. My first time driving into MD Anderson I thought that if cancer had eyes, it surely would be scared sxxtless by the simple view of all that this medical center was -- the enormity of what the doctors had access to for killing it. I also found that as scared as I was, there were those who were frightened more -- I specifically remember a teenage girl with her mom. A beautiful girl just beginning the torture that her docs were about to do to her. I never knew her outcome but I figured if she could face this as a child, then my wussaxx could stop whining and give it a go as well.

Fast forward almost a decade. I'm here. The cancer is probably too -- hiding somewhere in me, mutating and strategizing about its next attack. But so what -- I got to see my daughter recently go on her first date and she is almost finished with HS. I had the opportunity to realize just how much I'm in love with my wife -- and try to make amends for the previous decade of being so ignorant about what she means to me. And I'm almost 50 -- in another couple of months I will reach an age the doc told me was impossible. And I'm healthy. Granted, just walking into MD Anderson immediately makes me want to retch -- and I know it is psychological, but it does a good job of appearing physical as well. But its just a mindfxxk -- I'm fine. And I'm here, and every day is a chance to let my family and friends know how much I appreciate them.

My point to all of this silly rambling is that you are in the BEST hands that there are. But they can't do their best if you aren't there in mind and spirit. And when you are down in the dumps, you are going to transmit that to those around you. IMO -- don't do that. Neither of those. Reach down and grab your sack and decide that even if you are going to check out -- that you'll do so with your head held high. So you're sick, so what? Lots of people die in an instant due to a car crash. They don't get a chance to fight. So ruck up, and drive on. And in doing so -- without faking it -- let your family see that you are good with yourself and not whining. Whatever direction it goes -- realize that you have literally a million more times the chance to enjoy life than those in that car accident. Yeah, it hurts -- but move past that.

You know, chances are that you'll pull through fine. Don't come through it all with the memories of feeling down in the dumps. And if you don't make it -- give your family and friends some great times to recall.

Ayway, I just wanted to let you know that at a minimum I get how you are feeling mentally at least. But you need to knock off the Krevorkian silliness and demo to the disease that you still have a pair.

The most sincere wishes of success to you and your doctors....

Re: I have cancer - 10/26/13 03:45 AM

Small update

Clinical Trial at MD Anderson Houston failed. I'm in bad shape....lots of pain.

My belly is hurting so bad...

I'm on what is called ICE chemo.....acronyms

My diagnosis is bad ya'll. Having failed on hyper/cvad was not good.

This new chemo must shrink the tumor or else. That's it. I'm out of quarters. If it does.....and I am praying it does....

I have to have a bone marrow transplant immediately. I need a donor or I will die. It's a simple as that. To be tested is just a blood test.

If you are a match, technology is such now that It will not hurt to donate anymore. They don't harvest your bone marrow the old way. They give you a shot that will tell your bone marrow to produce stem cells and they harvest them with a machine that is a lot like a kidney dialysis machine. There is no pain involved at ALL.

Bad news is it takes three days. Other than that....

I'm back in Fort Worth at Harris Hospital, room 700.

I'm scared. I'm in pain, I'm worried about my family. I don't want to die yet...but it doesn't look very good for me at this point. This tumor came back with a vengeance and it's kicking my butt. It is growing so damn fast. I wished I knew what was feeding it. Maybe I should go to a 100% fruit and vegetable juicer diet.

I'm not giving up hope....because there is still a chance this "salvage" chemo is what they call it, will work. If it does I have a very small window to do the transplant. That means we have to find a donor soon. I mean very soon.

I've been in a bad way for a few weeks. I'm tired...worn out...scared. I don't know what to say but thank you to everybody here.

I wished I had better news.......

I'm really ready to try alternative things for sure. As I look back through this thread......lots of interesting things for sure.

I do read in here daily....I'd go insane if I didn't. It's hard to post and I miss my shooting life.

That's it for now.

How to register as a bone marrow donor

Registering to become a bone marrow donor is easy. Locate a donor center by visiting the National Marrow Donor Program's website or calling the organization's toll-free number at 800-MARROW2 (627-7692). If you are unable to find a donor center in your area, you can register online, and a tissue-typing kit with instructions on how to register as a donor will be mailed to you.

If you want to help me live, I need a bone marrow trasfer.

I beg everybody to please get tested. i have a small window to have the marrow transfusion. But I have to have a donor that matches.

Good news is it is now painless. The entire process is longer but there is no pain involved for the donor.

There are days lost but my life will be spared.

GO here to be tested

I think its just a cotton swab inside the mouth.

I'll do it if I'm a match. You at MD Anderson in Houston? It's probably quicker for me to go down there and get tested versus over the internet. I might already be in the system since I donated a couple years ago. If you want this, have your family contact me to see about having my records checked. More than likely I'll have to initiate the check since it's my personal info.

An unfortunate update. This is Fatalwishes' wife.

He is in hospice now. The son-of-a-bitch tumor won't respond to chemo. He's too sick and weak for chemo anyway. All that, and a donor was in the works. We were close to healing him.

Thank you all for supporting him and lending an ear. He is blessed to have so many friends.

Re: I have cancer - 12/10/13 03:59 AM

This is the first time I've stumbled out of the Classified Sections...and FatalWishes, you gotta admit: it's VERY easy to get side tracked looking for a new firearm or gear.

Everyone has a long list. Whether you're five and starting kindergarten, 16 with a new license (you remember the first time dad let you borrow the car, right? He should have known better...), newly married or a new parent, we all have a list filled with wants, needs and everything on God's earth which will make us smile.

I stumbled upon your thread and read through every response, getting a little misty, hoping for better news with each new post. Now, as I read your blog, I pray for your family as they begin a new journey, honoring you and your life, the impact you had on them, keeping our memory alive.

Life isn't fair: life is hard and life is very rewarding when we fill it with people who inspire us to be better people. I pray God's love, mercy and grace on your soul and an extra heap of comfort for your family.

I do not see any clear declaration of what has taken place, so I will take on the task. For all who read this thread, but have not seen Jeff's blog: Jeff passed away on the 8th of December.

I am sure Jeff's wife, kids, abd the rest of his family would appreciate being kept in the prayers of all.

RIP Fatalwishes.

Hate to hear that.

I would really like to see a "In Memoriam" thread in the News And Anouncements section for those THF members who are no longer with us. They have one over on TFF and I think it would be fitting to have one here as well. Just a thought.

RIP Fatalwhishes

Thanks for the update Red River. We prayed for better news but Jeff is in a better place and no longer suffering or in pain. I pray that his family can take comfort this holiday season knowing he's with our Father.

I rarely venture in here and just saw this. Words cannot explain. I'm so sorry for your loss, Mrs. Wish. Y'all are in our prayers .
