Flying with ammo

What are the rules about flying with ammo? Can I take it with me in a carry bag? Can I ship it with my luggage? Do I have to declare it? Just want to take some ammo to a friend when I go to visit.

You can carry it in your checked luggage but you need to declare it and it has to be in factory boxes.

Also check with the specific airline you are flying. They can have rules that are more restrictive than the TSA rules.

There are also limits to the amount you can take. The TSA and Airline websites should spell the amount out.

Flying domestically with ammo isn't that big a deal. No need declare ammo only firearms. Make sure it stays in your checked luggage & keep all ammo in a factory box. Even if you reload get a factory box. The TSA is ok with a MTM box or something similar but convincing the ticket agent should they have questions is another matter...also from personal experience traveling with full boxes of ammo is easier that partial boxes. (Seems like when a round or 2 is missing from the box the TSA thinks you might have them "hidden" in carry on luggage.)

Different airlines have rules on how much ammo you can transport in checked luggage (most limit you to 11 pounds) and some airlines want ammo kept away from your gun and others want all ammo locked in the case with your gun. Check the airlines website that you are flying.

Flying internationally with ammo is another story...PM if you want specifics on international travel with guns and ammo.

cheaper than dirt has old pistol cases for sale. I used one of those with a lock on it on my last trip and didnt have any issues.
