whats the deal with this TulAmmo?

I am seeing it everywhere, clearly its dirt cheap.....so whats the deal, any better than wolf for bear ammo? anyone had good bad or other EXPERIENCE shooting it in your AR? (specifically talking about .223 55g just for clarity)

I shot bunch of it through my ar last month no issues. dirty i guess. i think its kinda equal to wolf imo.

Cheap and fun to burn powder with.
Not precision ammo but, it is fun plinking ammo.

It and Silver Bear 62gr HP ammo, Hog Pills. Medicates a termination dose.

It's cheap because it has a steel case and is not reloadable.

Plenty of people reload steel ammo.

Not very well or very many times. Steel is too brittle for multiple loadings.

Tulammo is Wolf. Black box Wolf is made by Tula, Military Classic is made by Ulyanosk, and Bear ammo is made by Barnaul. In my unscientific experience Barnaul is the pick of the three, and I PREFER the lacquer coated cases- just ordered another 500 rds of Brown Bear soft point today.

My son in law buys it, shoots it and then brings it to me to reload. I usually run it in my tumbler for 6 hours or so and it looks almost like nickel. It sizes and loads great. The only thing I have noticed is that they are a little smaller internally than most brass cases.

My spikes hated Tula when I first got it. It was still in the break in period and Tula doesn't have a heavy enough charge to fully cycle the rifle. I quit using it after that but it would probably run in my rifle now after it being broke in.

Wolf/Tula is reported to be somewhat underpowered. I've seen chrono results in the 2800 fps range with 62 gr stuff. By comparison, Silver/Brown/Golden Bear clocks around 3050 with the same bullet weight.

You should not reload steel ammo.

1. you are not saving money; steel ammo is cheap enough that it makes the economics of reloading borderline unattractive.

2. reloading steel cases will work harden and make the steel brittle. This means it will eventually shatter. Brass also suffers from this but it is a much softer metal and therefore can bend and remain softer longer, add to that annealing and it remains pliable longer.

3. your loading dies will take a unnecessary beating by introducing steel on steel


There is nothing that makes the safety risk of loading steel ammo worth it. Some cases can and will have a catastrophic failure on the first reload.

You can get steel for twenty cents / round.

Shoot it and call it good. Once yOu have factored in your time, you've saved nothing.
