Bitter cold

When I was younger, and more angry at them, I'd sit in this weather for pigs. It's not that my Sitka gear will not keep me warm. It isn't that I don't have a propane heater in my blind.
It's what you do after you shoot one. The cold HURTS my hands and toes anymore.
That said, I still want to.

Blood thinners suck when it is cold. I have to wear heavy gloves to be comfortable when it is 30 degrees. With these temps staying in a few days cooking up some meals so not do that when it warms up and get in the rest of the month as much hunting time as I can.

Nothing hurts me more than bitter cold. Sub zero temps are so painful to me, soon as the gloves come off it starts to hurt in just a few seconds. But working in sub zero temps is how i make the most money.

It’s even harder sitting still though. Next year i am definitely gonna add a pair of ski goggles to the “uniform”.

Bibs and hot hands are money in the bank.

I have sat in a tree in 8-9 degrees and been ok, but there was no wind.

This past weekend it was below that and way windy, wind chill in the negative teens. I hunted all weekend. Was fun, shot a couple of doe. Problem is, the deer were not near as active when it was cold and windy. I am sure I would do it again...but not this season. Its over for me.

Well there is no better feeling than a warm cozy place and a hot meal in your belly after spending a day out in the bitter cold.

The coldest I have hunted in was a November trip to Montana. Didn't see above zero for a week and then it got to 5 degrees on the last day of the hunt. Coldest I saw was -21 and there was a good stiff north wind for most of the week.

I was out almost every day last week.. and I will say 30⁰ doesn't seem to bother me but 10⁰ and 15mph wind just hurts
My hands being the biggest issue.. even when I'm not hunting and just going outside for small tasks my hands start to burn a few minutes into it
I dunno how I used to go fishing in 20⁰ weather and dont remember it being an issue

Boy Scouts, 13° in a Sears Junior sleeping bag that I stuck out of a foot easy. I have a heavy coat fetish (non-sexual) to this day, 50-ish years later.

We got the "Polar Bear" award (and patch).

Once you have a cold weather injury it comes back twice as easy. This is a proven fact. Every outdoorsman at a minimum you got chillblaines probably every year, if you hunt winter time at all. So that cold air makes your skin burn on contact, in sub zero temperatures.

I work in weather as cold as 44 below zero. Yesterday morning i was unloading a dry van in international falls, mn with no heat if that tells you anything. They put carbonated beverages in there, it was so cold inside the trailer that every carbonated beverage exploded yet nothing else in the trailer got wet. That is saying something. The ambient tmeperature bottomed out at around minus 15 or minus 16 degrees, which is quite warm for international falls this time of year.

Working my tail off i don’t wear nothing but blue jeans and a hoodie to keep from overheating. But not one inch of my skin is uncovered, I still have to have a neck gaiter/face covering, a beanie, and gloves and wool socks of course.

Anything that is not covered, will have chillblaines.

Hunting in this kind of temperatures is 50 times worse. If you gotta be still and quiet it is going to hurt, there is nothing you can do to prevent pain. If you don’t move around or use chemical heaters/hand warmers in your clothes.

I meant to add, the coldest i have ever *felt* was breaking down camp on the beach cliffs at Camp Pendleton, the morning of the FEX near the end of boot camp. That cold wind blowing in from the ocean in February is ab so freaking lutely miserable, and it makes your skin burn. It is wet cold and your hands cease to function, you lose all your dexterity and all you’ve got is a pair of pincers lol. Glove liners wet gloves wet you are screwed.

You gotta have the right equipment.

Yeah and the military kind of stays behind times on that.

It's the last weekend for us. Doe and spikenonly. If I kill one I will give it to some guys at my friends tire shop. They always take care of me. Fifteen degrees, clear and a light NE wind. If not, I'll eat some chicken pot pie.

Coldest I have ever been I was in a diabetic coma when found, core temperature was 84.5 degrees. I cannot take the cold nearly as well since then. Add blood thinners to that and I just cannot take it like I used to.

Yep! hunting the cold is one thing but if you shoot something then you have to get your hands out. I've hunted last weekend with it was 15 and no problems but again I didn't pull the trigger...LOL
